Spotify wants some family plan users to prove that they live together

Spotify attacks users who could benefit from the "Premium for Family" discount by asking some to confirm that they live in the same household.

The Streaming Music service sent an email to family accounts users in the United States and Germany, where they said they wanted to confirm their GPS location. Quartz reports. Spotify says it will "only use your GPS data to check your location and nothing else," but if you do not send them, you may lose access to the plan.

Many users are unhappy with this request, arguing that people who do not need to live in the same household to be considered a family. Some may be separated, travel frequently or work abroad, a user pointed out Twitter.

In the middle of the negative answer, Spotify may have to reevaluate her definition of the family, or perhaps rename her family plan to be more room-centric. The fine print indicates that the Family Bonus case concerns "you and up to five people who reside at the same address", without mention of relationship.

The location confirmation request from the music streaming service may be an effort to support a decrease in the average revenue per user (ARPU). The Family Business gives premium access to up to six people for only $ 14.99 per month, compared to $ 9.99 for individual subscribers.
