Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest entry in the Nintendo platform hunter series. It is also expected to be the biggest release of the holiday season. After almost 20 years of battle between the biggest characters of some of the biggest gaming franchises, Ultimate will bring together all the fighters from all the Smash Bros. games. to date (as well as a few others) in one part.

With so many characters to choose from, Shacknews looks at each of the characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate individually, leading to the big game release on December 7th. Because many aspects of the game are subject to change, including character damage and special moving properties, these profiles should not be considered final and can be updated at any time. Any updated guide will be clearly indicated.

This is the main monkey. It's the thrilla gorilla. This is the first primate. He is one of the original Nintendo mascots, whose legacy goes back even before the original Nintendo entertainment system. He started life as a King Kong knockout, throwing barrels at Jumpman and standing on the building sites.

Donkey Kong has since found fame as a leader of the Kong clan, defending the island of Kong from all sorts of invaders, whether they are reptilian or not. He is probably outmatched by Mario at his own game, attacking the types of platforms that would make even the bravest plumbers.

He also stands out as one of the most powerful members of the Super Smash Bros. formation, able to master all varieties of enemies.

Overview of Donkey Kong Movements and Hunters

Donkey Kong is one of the essential fighters for those looking for a reliable heavyweight. DK may not have mobility as other members of the Smash Bros. formation. appreciate, but it is quite capable of accumulating percentages of knockout in the blink of an eye if someone is clumsy enough to get in his reach.

Here are the special moves of Donkey Kong:

  • Giant punch (neutral b): It makes sense that the most reliable gesture of DK involves his crushing fist. DK will mold his punch, the Popeye, to charge a powerful punch. At ten rounds, the punch will be fully charged and hit for massive damage. It can also be used in the air and the overhead version is significantly improved.
  • Kong Spinning (Up B): Donkey Kong goes around like a helicopter, damaging any target in his path. It's a moderate recovery motion, but the vertical distance is terrible. DK makes up for the lack of distance with a greater than normal range of attack.
  • Head shot (side B): This is a solid option for those looking to inflict good damage without taking the time to load Giant Punch. The head shot has a nice side effect where he can occasionally bury his opponents in the ground. It's risky to use in the open, but if it's just hitting, it'll sting the opponent for an almost certain knockout.
  • Hand slap (bottom b): DK hits the ground and knocks anyone out of range. The hand slap can also cause moderate damage, but it will not cause damage. This is more of a configuration movement and may be followed by more difficult movements or combos.
  • DK Punch Damage (Final Smash): The former Donkey Kong Final Smash has been removed in favor of this wave of punch that should sound familiar to anyone who has played the games of the new generation Donkey Kong Country. Just as he hits bosses who dare to invade Kong Island, DK will also hit anyone who is caught in the Final Smash lineup.

Aside from his Final Smash, Donkey Kong's moves are virtually unchanged from previous Smash Bros. games. But these changes have all brought significant change, for better or for worse.

First of all, there is Giant Punch, which always causes considerable damage. This damage now has a cost, because the delay of the displacement has increased significantly, which makes the DK more vulnerable in case of failure. That said, the offset of the aerial version of the move has been greatly reduced, making it a more viable offensive option. Those looking for a faster hit can still opt for Headbutt, which is also improved. Spinning Kong is now traveling from a totally different angle. The movement now takes less horizontal distance, even though it is now traveling a bit higher. The change of angle makes the movement worse as a recovery option, which means that DK players will have to work harder to make sure that they will not be eliminated from the platform. The trade-off is that Spinning Kong is now better off as an offensive option, thanks to a new final blow that inflicts moderate damage and a decent distance back.

Finally, there is the hand slap, which is mostly unchanged. However, both versions of the movement (grounded and aerial) can now be canceled mid-way, giving DK a little more mobility.

Esports Observations

Few players have identified Donkey Kong's hands. However, Donkey Kong has proven to be a reliable backup option for many players. One of the most recognizable examples is Gavin "Tweek" Dempsey, who turns to DK for some clashes, but keeps his notes close to his chest for now.
