New Microsoft Surface Pro 6 has arrived, with updated internal components and an elegant black color variant. If you're looking for a premium tablet, these two devices should be at the top of your list. While we are still looking forward to a Surface Pro 6 evaluation unit, it should take a look at the comparison between the Microsoft tablet and the iPad Pro. Just keep in mind that one new iPad Pro could be on the way in October, with a new design and Face ID.
Design
These two metal plates look identical to their predecessors, with one exception: the new Surface Pro 6 is now available in matte black, a finish on which long-time Apple users will drool.
All the rest of the design of the Surface Pro 6 is familiar, including the 165 degree rotating kickstand, the power button and the volume rocker.
Also available in silver, the Surface Pro 6 fits in Microsoft Type Cover keyboards, available in burgundy, blue, platinum and black.
The iPad has not changed much over the years either. The machined aluminum and glass rectangle has no flash below the rear camera and the upper receiver bar is no longer black. Otherwise, it's the same tablet that we've seen year after year: a sleek and elegant metal sheet with rounded corners and an Apple logo centered at the back. Apple also lets you choose from three colors: gray, gold and silver.
The comparison of the drawings of these two slates comes down to the form in relation to the function. Although both devices are extremely portable, the iPad Pro (0.27 inch thick) is thinner and lighter than the Surface Pro 6 (0.33 inch thick). However, the Surface Pro 6 has a more practical design thanks to its rear kickstand and a wider range of ports (more details below).

The Surface Pro 6 and the iPad Pro are available in different configurations. The entry-level Surface Pro, with a budget of $ 899, includes an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. In comparison, the iPad Pro the cheapest starts at $ 100 less and comes with a Fusion A10X processor, but it only has 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.
Increasing specifications quickly increases the price of the Surface Pro well above $ 1,000. You'll spend $ 1,499 for a Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Splashing on the high-end model, you get an i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, all for $ 2,299.

You have fewer options with the iPad Pro because the processor and RAM are fixed components. However, you can increase storage capacity to 256GB or 512GB, but choosing these storage options increases the price of the iPad Pro to $ 949 and $ 1,149, respectively.
Keyboard and pen
The iPad Pro and Surface Pro 6 can both be used as traditional laptops when combined with their respective keyboard accessories. We prefer the Type Cover to the Apple Smart Keyboard because the Microsoft keyboard has a touchpad and a run of 1.3 millimeters. Colored fabric, the Type Cover is so comfortable that we dubbed it "the best removable keyboard on the market". The Signature version, with the Alcantara fabric, costs $ 159.99, and the black standard version is priced at $ 139.99.
The iPad Pro equivalent of the Type Cover is the Apple Smart Keyboard keyboard at $ 169. Unlike the Microsoft keyboard, it does not have touchpad, and the shallow keys move on a lean 0.5 mm. The folio-style fabric keyboard keeps the iPad Pro balanced, even when you use the tablet on your lap.
Display
The iPad Pro has a slightly larger screen, at 12.9 inches, compared to the Surface Pro 6 and its 12.3-inch screen. It's not a huge difference, but every tenth of an inch counts for that size.
Both screens are filled with pixels, but the 2736 x 1824 pixel panel of the Surface Pro 6 is a shaper with a resolution of 267 dpi. But do not worry, IOS fans, the resolution of 2224 x 1668, 264 -ppi display also produces sharp images.
If the Surface Pro 6's screen looks like that of its predecessor (which reproduced 140% of the sRGB spectrum), the screen of the new tablet should be more colorful than the iPad's dynamic panel. Pro (122% of the sRGB spectrum). On the other hand, the iPad Pro has reached a blinding brightness of 555 nits. We would be surprised if the Surface Pro 6 could exceed or even match this result.
The ports
It is not surprising that the iPad Pro and Surface Pro 6 lack ports. And although the Surface Pro 6 has the best choice, it remains an exasperating omission: USB-C. Unfortunately, Microsoft has kept the Mini DisplayPort and Surface Connect port associated with a single USB 3.0 port, a microSD card reader and a headphone jack.
The iPad Pro only has enough space for a headphone jack at the top, a proprietary smart connector on the left side and a lightning connector at the bottom.
Battery life
Microsoft is bragging that the Surface Pro 6 could last 13.5 hours with a charge, but you should take this claim with a grain of salt. In fact, Microsoft was saying the same thing with the Surface Pro 2017, but this machine only lasted 7 hours and 30 minutes on the battery test of the Mag laptop, which involves surfing the Web in Wi-Fi. Fi at a brightness of 150 nits. We will have a better idea of the detachable world endurance once we have put a test unit to the test.
Until then, we can only look at the historical data, which places the iPad Pro in the winner's seat. The tablet lasted 12 hours and 9 minutes on our test.
Perspective
With the expected performance improvements and a new slender black color variant, the Surface Pro 6 is poised to be a compelling alternative to the proven 12.9-inch iPad Pro. If you want a built-in kickstand, prefer a keyboard with touchpad or a USB-A port, look for the Microsoft tablet when it will fall at the end of the month of October.
