The big Microsoft event could bring relatively minor changes this week in New York, with the refresh of its surface to be safe, even disappointing, as it prepares for the sales season. The computer giant has called the media in New York on Tuesday, October 2 to reveal the latest fruits of its surface calculation team. However, some early leaks have somewhat spoiled the surprise.
We already had a pretty good idea of what we should expect. On the one hand, the Surface Pro is about to get a makeover, with the 2017 version of the 2-in-1 replaced by a 2018 update. We are also likely to see a new Surface Pro for 2018. The Surface Book 2, meanwhile, also has a year.
As we saw during a leak earlier this month, updates for the upcoming week should not answer all that Surface fans have asked for. Indeed, if industry conversations are true – and it is reasonable to expect at least some surprises on Tuesday – it will be the connectivity that remains at the top of the list of complaints.
The most frustrating is probably the lack of USB-C ports, which reiterates a new leak of WinFuture today. Although its competitors are adopting USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 technologies, the Surface Pro 6 (2018), as some believe, will rely on its standard USB-A and Mini DisplayPort for external graphics. Microsoft will also continue to use its proprietary magnetic-charged charging cable.
These are also annoying news for the Surface Laptop 2. These, it is suggested, will always be available in a variety of colors, according to the original model. However, there will be no USB-C or Thunderbolt 3.
Instead, there will be a slight processor bump, he said. The entry-level Laptop 2 will feature the Intel Core i5-8250U processor with a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz and a 3.6 GHz Turbo Boost. Microsoft would also have given up the option of 4 GB of RAM, at least on the laptop, which would make a basic configuration of 8 GB.
However, you still have a 128GB NVMe PCIe SSD for storage, which seems a little sketchy at this point. Options will include 16 GB of RAM and a choice of up to 1 TB of SSD storage. An Intel Core i7 quad-core processor will also be available as an upgrade.
Both units will have Windows 10 S as standard, but buyers will be able to fully unlock Windows 10 Home if they prefer it. There will be a black finish, new to the Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lines, although it will apparently only be available in more sophisticated configurations.
Microsoft's reach has been an unexpected success, although criticisms of the lack of more modern ports have increased in volume over the last twelve months. The Surface Book 2 adopting the USB Type-C – even if it was not compatible with Thunderbolt 3 -, the hope was that the more affordable models of Microsoft would be the same. When that happens, however, remains a mystery.
