RCS is the next-generation text messaging standard designed to make traditional texting a bit more like dedicated messaging platforms, with features such as multi-person conversations and read receipts. The adoption of the standard supported by Google has been slow in the United States, but it is taking a big step forward with T-Mobile Deployer RCS Universal Profiles to select Android users.
T-Mobile and Sprint support RCS messaging for a few years, but it's RCS "Universal" which allows advanced features of the standard to work for users across networks as opposed to those on the same operator. This is RCS Universal that promises to bring a unified messaging experience to Android users, regardless of carrier or device type.
Unfortunately, there is bad news: T-Mobile's Universal RCS update now. The carrier claims that other Android devices will get support later this year, which should be too difficult to achieve, since all Android phones that it sells already support the standard RCS. Those who have received the update from RCS Universal Profile should see the changes in the text phone application of their phone.
While it is great that RCS Universal is finally starting to have real support, the fact that it is limited to two operators and users with very specific devices, we are still far from it. a standard and modern SMS experience for Android. This will not be possible until carriers like Verizon and AT & T ship with RCS Universal, which they promised to do, but still have no timetable.
