After the last leak, Niantic confirmed that the annual Pokemon Go Halloween event would be back for another year. The event begins today, Oct. 23, at 1 pm Eastern Standard Time, and features a handful of new Pokémon Gen 4s, as well as the first legendary Gen 4.

As in previous years, Niantic introduces two new Ghost and Dark type Pokemon during Halloween. This time, players will have their first chance to catch Drifloon, Stunky and their advanced forms, Drifblim and Skuntank. The studio also offers new Ghost Pokemon-inspired hats, shirts and training backpacks via the in-game store, including a Gengar backpack and a Drifloon cap.

On top of that, Niantic is launching a new series of special search quests. While the previous special searches had led to encounters with the mythical Pokemon Mew and Celebi, this new game revolves around Spiritomb – another phantom Pokemon introduced in Generation 4. Niantic also performs new field-based research tasks focused on Pokemon ghosts and blacks. Finally, as in previous years, players will earn double the normal amount of Candy for capturing Pokemon during Halloween.

Perhaps most notably, the first legendary Pokemon Gen 4 will debut in Pokemon Go. Coinciding with the start of Halloween, Pokemon Platinum's cover monster, Giratina, will be the subject of a battle around the world. November 20, giving players about a month to add one to their collection. Giratina is a Pokémon double Ghost / Dragon. You will have to bring a powerful Dark or Dragon type to challenge it.

The Pokemon Go Halloween event is scheduled to run until November 1st. In addition, the next community game day will be Saturday, November 10, although Niantic has yet to announce additional details.
