The latest MacBook Pro retains the fourth major body overhaul that the line of products has seen. The new design relies heavily on the techniques used for MacBook Retina, MacBook Air and iPad, with a design still 15.5 mm (0.61 inch) thick, making it thinner than the MacBook Air.
The Apple's high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro is still available in standard Silver version and Space Gray version darker, and is sold with a smaller 13-inch version – but this model is a different revision .
Touch ID is still a physical button, and it serves as an emergency way to force a shutdown in the event of a nasty Kernel panic, as well as a power switch. The other power functions are managed automatically by default, the user opening and closing the lid to respectively wake up or brown the machine.
The tactile identification is not universal, however. If you log out of your account, you will need to provide a password to log back in. Touch ID only works if your account is active. You must also log in manually after a power cycle, as with iOS devices.
The touch bar is always intended to appear and function as a dynamic band of virtual keyboard keys, not limited by the physical structure of the mechanical keys. When you hold down the FN key, the touch bar returns to a standard 12-key band and the ESC key (below).
If you start Windows, the touch bar returns to the display of virtual function keys. But – you're probably not reading to hear about the Touch Bar again.
In Figures
The update of the 2017 MacBook Pro was the addition of Kaby Lake. The 2018 took a step further with Coffee Lake, and DDR4 RAM in the 15-inch model.
There are two main configurations of the 15-inch MacBook Pro. We covered the 15-inch i7 model on Saturday, and it's a very solid machine. And, that one is probably the machine of choice for most looking at a MacBook Pro.
For this review, we are looking at the 15-inch 15.9GHz MacBook Pro, with 512GB of flash memory, and 32GB of RAM. The retail price on this configuration is $ 3499.
Keyboard, Again and Again
We've already talked a lot about the keyboard in both the 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the 15-inch i7. We will not dive too deeply here.
Yes, it is much quieter. Yes, there is a new silicone seal. No, we do not know yet if this will contribute to reliability, but we are sure that there have been improvements in this regard on the 2017 keyboard.
Silicon Test
The i9 processor our model has a base speed of 2.9GHz and a maximum boost clock of 4.8GHz. Geekbench 4 is not all tale, but the results for this MacBook Pro i9 are an impressive improvement from the 2017 supermodel.
The single-core performance reaches 5582 during the Geekbench test, with 24,226 for the multi-core performance. This makes the machine the second most powerful machine that Apple has ever designed for single-chip burst performance, and the seventh for multicore behind the iMac Pro and two high-end Mac Pro configurations in 2013.
Geekbench's results test a variety of processor tasks, most of which do not maximize your processor, allowing the i9 to run at impressive clock speeds. For tasks such as video editing, rendering tests are much more definitive.
As we discussed after Apple's patch for the thermal throttling situation was deployed, the 15-inch MacBook Pro 2018 i9 is 30% faster in Cinebench R15, 1056, against the peak 2017 of 805. The 2018 i7 configuration that we tested on Saturday returned a score of 991.
We ran a series of video editing tests from the Bruce X test in Final Cut Pro. This 5K rendering mainly uses graphical tasks and our high-end Macbook Pro 2018 was only two seconds faster.
Then we made a 5-minute 4K project with effects that impose the CPU and GPU more uniformly but do not optimize them. Our high-end model 2018 was 9% faster. The work took 3 minutes and 29 seconds to finish on the i7, against 2 minus 47 seconds on the i9.
Taking this a step further, we wanted to see how this machine behaves under the toughest loads graphics and processor, using 4.5K RED RAW with effects. Our 5 minute project was made 18% faster with our new i9 model.
The rendering took 14 minutes and 25 seconds to render on the 2017 MacBook Pro i7 15-inch, compared to 12 minutes and 15 seconds on the i9 – about 18 percent faster.
By amplifying previous tests, we made another 5K 4K project with effects but this time using HEVC footage and exporting to HEVC. Apple requires the use of this codec more effective if you want to shoot 4K 60 or 1080P 240FPS.
Apple's Macbook 2017 took even 10 minutes to make the file, with the new i9 taking only 3 minutes and 51 seconds. This difference is not only due to faster performance, but mainly because of much more efficient HEVC encoding and decoding hardware in the Intel 8th generation CPU.
Finishing with Photoshop and Lightroom, the latest 15-inch MacBook only converted 4% faster raw photos in JPEG to 4% faster, and we found no difference in consistency when using programs
True Tone
There is a lot to say about True Tone. In short, Apple's True Tone technology takes the input of a pair of sensors to the screen, and changes the internal display settings and external compatible ones to hold account of the lighting conditions in the room.
This is another feature that you already know whether you want it or not. Reviews are shared between video editors and photos about the utility of the feature.
The functionality is not bad, but it is not necessarily excellent in all conditions and for all users. Since you can turn it off at will, you are not stuck with it if you do not need it.
At this point, we are not sure if it's just a checkbox in a list of specifications, or something more useful in the long run for most users. We'll let you know in a few months
This X in the GPU is nice, with a variable improvement
The Radeon Pro 555 and 560 are delivered in the 2017 model. The 2018 model has "X" versions, with slightly improved performance and more video RAM.
Like previous models, macOS can automatically activate and switch to the dedicated GPU when needed and return to the built-in graphics to save power. In these cases, the built-in graphics are faster than the built-in chipset of the previous generation, but nothing significant.
The OpenCL graphical test in Geekbench 4 brought us an improvement with the added X from 42,990 to 52,499 in OpenCL. The metal has been significantly improved, reaching 60,149 with the 560X, against 38,701 with the 560 – but a good part of this gain comes from the improved software.
RAM
The RAM was updated in the MacBook Pro 15 inch 2018 16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 to 16GB of 2400MHZ DDR4 soldered to the motherboard. For $ 400 more, you can get 32GB total, which is the configuration of this configuration.
As we have already said, you already know if you need it. If you do not know if you're doing it, you probably do not do it – but it's not a bad addition if you're looking to keep the machine for four years or more.
Apple changed DDR4 RAM to get the 32GB option because it could literally not get there with LPDDR3 RAM. The inclusion is both faster than LPDDR3 and more energy hungry. And, it is also hotter, further complicating an already tight thermal situation.
Related to all of this …
Thermals
The i9 MacBook Pro 15-inch is a hot machine. Although it's pretty great, it's not what we're talking about. It's hot in all respects, in a very small chassis.
We have already said we believe that Apple was watered by Intel, while they were preparing for the 2016 MacBook Pro speaker in 2015. We know that In 2015, Intel promised delivery of 10nm Core chips process well before now, and even smaller by 2018.
Coffee Lake is still 14nm without disapproval. Intel has not set a delivery target in seven years, which has not been done for months or years.
This, plus the DDR4 RAM, plus the 555X or 560X GPU, coupled with a slim design, still leads to a machine is not quite what it could be because of the heat – although it's way better than before the stamp that was released on July 24th.
In our use, when the machine was under load, the metal surface of the 107F keyboard around the GH and J. C keys is still usable, but it is very, very hot. This might not be bad in the winter, but in a virginian summer, it is not terrible.
There are still a lot of details difficult to examine with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with regard to the thermal environment. We will study many more work environments, including the effects of ambient temperature and machine orientation, as weeks and months go by to see if they make a difference.
driving is absolutely not in rest. By running the BlackMagic disk speed test after three days of indexing the machine, we found a write speed of 2790 megabytes per second.
Other sites claimed that this was due to the cloning of the APFS, but after consultation with BlackMagic, we confirmed that this was not the case and that the speeds were real.
Thunderbolt 3
There is still much lamentation and grinding of teeth about Thunderbolt 3 and by association, the USB-C connector. Two years later, users are still complaining about the cost of adapting the dongles and the lack of consideration of users for the transition to the new connector.
For the defense of the user, they are not entirely wrong, from the release, the less the complaints are valid. USB-C-to-any connectors are cheap and plentiful. You can get there from here, and it is not expensive to do it
In the defense of Apple, Thunderbolt 3 with the USB-C connector is over to time proof and much faster than USB 3.0, and is a game changer for use cases, if you let it help you and fight it less.
He is here, and he stays. It's time to deal with the problem.
One solution that can reduce costs is a Thunderbolt dock. While the Thunderbolt 3 docks start at $ 199, the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter will work fine if you want to use an older dock with the latest equipment, which may make it cheaper a Thunderbolt 2 (or even an original Thunderbolt).
In addition, if you plan to use an external GPU, most enclosures have USB-A and Ethernet ports, in an accessory that does not cost much more than a dock. If you only need a few USB-A ports, get a USB 3.0 docking station, as well as a USB-C to USB-B cable for around $ 8. Problem solved.
Regarding MagSafe, we have been testing USB-C for a very long time. On a melamine, Corian or finished wood desktop surface, the force required to pull out the Apple USB-C charging cable is about three-quarters of that needed to break a MagSafe 2 connection , when the cable is removed – center clearance angle on the horizontal plane, and less than 30 degrees from center to vertical.
USB-C is not even close to the Canon 45W connector that Apple has migrated away from MagSafe.
And, the AC adapter also has a USB-C connector with the same disconnecting force, so now there are two quick break points in case of accident or accidental pulling.
The Apple service numbers that we have collated confirm it. The commissioning of MagSafe in January 2006 reduced by half the accidental damage claims by 2009. These figures have not changed for MagSafe 2. But since the release of the MacBook Pro it has not changed. There has been no increase in the rate of accidental damage and perhaps a decrease, but we will wait another year to fully declare this.
With a battery of 10 hours, we do not know why you would like to string a power cord along a transit route anyway. If you are concerned, buy a USB-PD battery and keep it next to your computer.
If you're still not happy that MagSafe is gone, there are some inexpensive options on Amazon.
It's not the end of the world, but it's an adjustment for users. This adjustment is better done than struggling with half-cooked solutions.
The MacBook Pro is a workaholic, but is not a desktop computer
The MacBook Pro is not a replacement for iMac Pro in all respects but with a eGPU it's getting close enough. It all comes down to your own personal workflow, and use cases.
If you are doing long series rendering or the like, the iMac Pro will work best for you. That said, unless you're buying a big bag and you're ready to ship it to Starbucks or an off-site location, the MacBook Pro is the solution.
The MacBook Pro i9 is a solid device, one that is faster than any other MacBook Pro.
If most of your work is bursts, like scrolling HEIC files in Photos, then this machine is the best thing you can buy from Apple if you need a laptop. But this is not a universal key to all your computer problems, and there are arguments to save the $ 300 and get the Core i7 version, given the proximity of the benchmarks and the actual test results for the long treatments. ] But here's the thing: not everything is a long work of treatment. Even most editing tasks do not constantly kill your CPU and GPU. Considering your own workflow based on what you do most of the time is crucial to making that decision.
If you come from a 2017 MacBook Pro or earlier, from a performance standpoint, the i9 is unquestionably an excellent choice. However, the actual performance of the i9 is not supremely higher than that of the i7 2018.
It's a lot of computer, with a lot of power, for a lot of money. There are cheaper machines with the i9, which deal with many identical thermal constraints, under Windows. So, another question is: how much is macOS uncompromising for you?
Is this five per cent speed increase over this year's i7 MacBook Pro 15-inch worth $ 300 more for what you do day-to-day for the i9 upgrade? We can not tell you this for sure, and it depends on how much time you save with that five percent, and how much time you have.
You can tell whatever you want that there are cheaper providers, and you'll be right. But, none of them brings macOS to the table. The efforts to attract the attention of Apple's operating system on them are intriguing, but they are not legal, certainly not ethical, and all have a compromise.
Get the right tool for the right job. The i9 MacBook Pro is the perfect tool for MacOS users, but it may not be for everyone, and it's fine.
