A number of Apple Watch Series 4 owners in Australia have had a reboot problem with their new mobile devices over the weekend due to daylight saving time, while an AppleInsider reader reports that another time zone problem has apparently not been solved in watchOS.
Users report on Reddit and social media their Apple Watch stopped working properly on Sunday morning, shortly after the daylight saving time. The affected Apple Watch units were forced to engage in a reboot loop, which consumed the battery and made it virtually impossible to reload or reboot manually.
A Reddit article on the problem suggests that the complication of the Infographics activity may be the cause, a user proposing to change the monitoring dial via the Watch application as a way to escape the reboot cycle. The same poster notes that Infograph Modular face selection with activity complication in the Watch application even caused the application to close.
It seems that the problem only occurs during the 24 hours after the change of daylight saving time, users telling their devices that were once affected to return to normal.
Although the issue is largely resolved for the moment, it is unclear if similar issues will arise when other markets change their clocks. The United States will leave summer time on November 4, while the United Kingdom and Europe will change on October 28.
It is likely that Apple will release a software update to close the bug, but it is unclear whether it will appear in time for other time changes.
The issue of the hour of the day is not the only problem related to the time that affects the Apple Watch. A reader advised AppleInsider another problem specific to the Apple Watch with Cellular, which concerns people on the border of time zones.
When the Apple Watch determines the time zone via a cellular network, it acquires it from a connected iPhone or, in the absence of iPhone, by connecting to a cell phone tower located nearby.
According to the reader, who lives in Australia on the border between two states with different time zones and only one of which respects the late hour, this can cause problems for the cell phone Apple Watch separated from his iPhone. Depending on which tower the Apple Watch is connected to, the exact time of the player's location can run up to an hour, simply because the cell tower is in question is located in another time zone.
An "experienced AppleCare specialist" would have worked with the reader on this earlier this year, acknowledging the problem and stating that a software solution would be about to arrive, but it has not yet been published.
AppleInsider has contacted Apple for a comment.
