The new Galaxy S10 is not only Samsung's most exciting new smartphone for years, it's also the company's most important new smartphone in years. The year 2018 was kind of a sabbatical year for Samsung in regards to its mobile business. After a series of impressive releases in the high-end smartphone segment, this year's Galaxy S and Galaxy Note updates were very disappointing. In both cases, Samsung has chosen to publish minor iterative updates with designs almost identical to those of their predecessors. The Galaxy Note 9 is slightly less disappointing than the Galaxy S9 and S9 + because it has a new S Pen and a much higher battery life, but suffice to say that no one has been impressed by Samsung's new flagship products in 2018. The Galaxy S9 and S9 + are poised to become the least-selling Galaxy S phones since 2012, and Note 9 was released two weeks ago and yet it has already been forgotten by the media.
Next year, the Galaxy S10 should put an end to Samsung's cold snap. Rumor has it that the phone is a new design incorporating a wide range of exciting new features built into a phone that takes Samsung's Infinity screen design to the next level. Samsung's fans have been looking forward for months. Heck, even we are excited for the debut of the Galaxy S10. But a new note from a big Samsung insider has seriously slammed our expectations for Samsung's new Galaxy S10 phones.
The Galaxy S10 will not be Samsung's next big flagship product. Instead, the company has confirmed its intention to give the world a glimpse of its first collapsible Galaxy phone later this year. There is still no word on the output of the phone, but it does not really matter. As we explained yesterday, you certainly should not be excited about the first foldable Galaxy smartphone for several important reasons.
Instead, it's the Galaxy S10 that deserves the excitement, or at least we thought so. The phone should be a huge update for the Galaxy S line, with several important firsts. It will be Samsung's first flagship product to be powered by next-generation 7nm processors such as the iPhone Xs. Apple will debut next week and will be Samsung's first flagship product to offer an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. The phone will include up to five different cameras – the Galaxy S10 + will have a three-lens camera on the back and a dual-lens selfie camera – and it will present several other exciting new features.
In fact, all this exciting new technology could end up in a phone that looks like Samsung's last two Galaxy S models.
Ice Universe, a specialist in the industry, has a very good reputation for leaking information on unpublished Samsung phones. In fact, some of what we know about the upcoming Galaxy S10 has been reported by Ice Universe before being confirmed elsewhere. He still seems to have the track of Samsung's new products, and now a series of posts on Twitter suggests that he has heard about the design of the Galaxy S10. Here is his last tweet of Thursday morning, which reflects a feeling he shared several times in the past:
It is obvious that Ice Universe has not yet confirmed what the new Galaxy S10 will look like. But it also emerges from his tweets of the last weeks that he has heard several times that the design of the Samsung Galaxy S10 was going to disappoint. Earlier rumors suggested that Samsung's Galaxy S10 would remove huge bevels above and below the screen to adopt a more modern "all-screen" design. Depending on what Ice Universe has heard in the past month, this may not be the case.
The Galaxy S10 phones from Samsung will undoubtedly be better received than the S9 duo thanks to all the interesting new features and great performance improvements expected. But if all this new technology is integrated into a phone whose design is reused for the third year in a row, when all smartphone manufacturers have adopted an all-screen design, it would be a big disappointment.
