The Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro is a 9 seconds electric drag monster presented at SEMA

Chevrolet COPO Camaro is part of a limited number of cars ready to be driven by a manufacturer that you can buy. At SEMA 2018, Chevy is surpassed by creating a COPO concept that will cover the quarter mile in relative silence.

Chevy unveiled the eCOPO Camaro concept at SEMA, the annual aftermarket trade show. It takes the general idea of a COPO Camaro – build and sell a car especially for drag racing – and has modified it with a touch of the 21st century by means of a powerful electric motor.

The eCOPO Camaro is powered by a pair of BorgWarner electric motors, with a net power of more than 700 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. All this torque is transmitted through a traditional "Turbo 400" automatic transmission to a solid rear axle, and it's enough to push that concept down on a quarter mile drag strip in the 9 seconds.

The electric motors may be quiet, but the tires will certainly not be.

As for the batteries, the Camaro eCOPO uses four 200-volt battery modules stored at different locations: two are in the back seat, one in the spare tire housing and the fourth on top of the battery. rear axle. Its 800 volt system will allow a fast charge, which is useful on an acceleration track, where the action never really slows down. Porsche will also use an 800-volt system in its future Taycan EV.

Chevrolet did not go it alone on this project. He called on Hancock and Lane Racing, an experienced team in the field of electric drag racing. The team also worked with Bothell High School's Automotive Technology Program in Seattle, with several students contributing to the development and assembly of the concept.

Better yet, this package is something that Chevy could really offer to the public. The Camaro eCOPO has the same flange and crankshaft mounting design as GM's LS V8 engine family and, like all other auxiliary tools (eg transmission and other transmission components) is basically a simple bolted replacement for a traditional gasoline engine. Electric box motors are no longer in the realm of science fiction.

If you shoot four-quarters of a mile, the safety-mounted parachute is not just for the watch.

Chevrolet Camaro Turbo 1LE 2019: It may not be electric, but Camaro's four-banger is very good.

Chevrolet Blazer 2019: If you prefer that the Camaro looks like something bigger, this one is for you.
