Smaller is not always more effective
The new unit is a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 310 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. It is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission system.
It will be available in Mid LT and RST versions. The current 4.3-liter V-6 engine will be available on the Work Truck, Custom and Custom Trail Boss versions.
The fuel consumption ratings for the rear-wheel drive models are not very good either. It features a 5.3-liter V-8 engine that reaches 19-mph combined or a lean 17-mpg city and 23-mpg on highways.
Silverado 4×4 2019 models with four-cylinder engines will reach 20 mpg in total, or 19 cities / 22 highways.
The 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine would offer a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 pounds, 600 pounds more than the Ram and Ford models. The maximum payload capacity is estimated at 2,280 pounds.
Silverado Vs Competition
Compared to the competition, efficiency is not a selling point for the Silverado.
Ford offers a 2.7-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine with a combined efficiency of 22 mpg; 20 mpg in town and 26 mpg on the highway. Even the new Ram 1500 beats this four-cylinder engine with its 3.6-liter V6 engine featuring a mild hybrid system that offers a combined speed of 22 miles per gallon; 20 mpg in town and 25 mpg on the highway.
Other relevant details
The Chevrolet Silverado LT starts at $ 38,400 for the four-cylinder double cab and standard bed engine.
The same RST engine model starts at $ 40,300. For short bed and crew cabins, the cost is $ 2,400 more. Four-cylinder models are expected to start arriving at dealers by the end of the year.
Our take
Even luxury cars and sports cars, which were once known to use gasoline, are becoming more fuel efficient. This shows that people consider this as an important criterion when they make a purchase. While Chevrolet was introducing a four-cylinder engine into a van, the only logical explanation was that it would be less thirsty. If the truck economy does not improve, why bother launching the new engine? This makes no sense to me because I think there is no alternative to moving.
