The very idea of turning Konami's iconic rhythmic game into a film is already clearly absurd. But new projects seem to indicate that this idea was apparently not stupid enough.
Variety reports that Konami, known for things like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevaniaand dismissal of Hideo Kojima – associated with Greg Silverman's Stampede and the wonderful generic name Branded Entertainment to launch a film franchise based on Dance Dance Revolution. Konami launched the arcade classic 20 years ago and has released a multitude of games in the longstanding franchise in recent decades.
Usually, that would not be something that io9 would cover. After all, you could imagine a Dance Dance Revolution the adaptation, I do not know, rival dance troupes that are fighting, like Intensify, or maybe a fallout from The right place Jason Mendoza, passionate about dance. But here is the thing. This is, at least according to Variety, the tone of the elevator for this new movie:
The project will explore a world on the verge of destruction where the only hope is to unite through the universal language of dance.
I am sorry, what? Do we have an apocalyptic film about a disaster where people have to save the world by dancing?
God please. Do it as you please. I do not think I really understood that I needed an apocalypse movie adjacent to science fiction about the power of sick beats and flowing movements. But it turns out that yes. Let the dance dance revolt begin!
