Three of the next four character-based additions for Final Fantasy 15 were canceled, announced today Square Enix, and the game director, Hajime Tabata, has left the company.
One of the add-ons, Final Fantasy 15 Episode Ardyn, will still be released in March 2019, but episodes based on the characters Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis have been removed. The four episodes had already been broadcast in 2019 and would have offered parallel stories and an alternative finale to Final Fantasy 15.

Regarding the departure of game director, Hajime Tabata, Square Enix has announced that he had resigned from the company in October and that he would be creating his own company. Akio Ofuji, director of the global brand of Final Fantasy 15says in a YouTube video that Luminous Productions, the new studio created this year to develop an AAA title for a global audience, will focus more on developing downloadable content than developing a new game.
Tabata did not appear during the video hosted by Ofuji and instead offered a written statement about his resignation from Square Enix:
Two full years will have passed since the release of FFXV. Honestly, I think the reason we managed to go that far is because of all your loyal fans. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Today, I have a personal announcement to make to you all. I, Hajime Tabata, will leave Luminous Productions and the Square Enix group as of October 31, 2018.
I've been able to gain so much experience with my experience at Square Enix. Every title I could belong to means a lot to me. however, FFXV stood out from this group as it was a special project for me in which I was going all-in.
That's why I decided to take the opportunity to officially announce my departure from FFXV to all the fans who have supported the title around the world.
As far as my next projects and my near future are concerned, I have a project that I really want to concretise as the next challenge. FFXV. For this reason, I decided to leave my current position and create my own business in order to reach my goal.
As production of Episode Ardyn Continuous and Luminous Productions is working on new projects, I felt it was time to pass the torch to the next generation of talented and trustworthy colleagues and I think they will create something incredible.
From now on, I will support Square Enix and Luminous Productions, as well as all your fans.

Tabata was announced at the head of Luminous Productions in March. When we spoke to Tabata at Gamescom last year, he told Polygon that he was interested in working on something completely different for his monitoring of Final Fantasy 15, which was launched end of 2016.
"The next project I want to do is a totally new IP address," he told us afterwards. "I think it will be a very large-scale project based on everything we've learned and developed for Final Fantasy 15. "
We also spoke to Tabata in September, where he talked about his prospects for the future of Final Fantasy and beyond – which has certainly changed drastically.
