The evolution of virtual assistants

Marchelle Abrahams looks at the good, the bad and the ugly side of PDAs.

Apple's Siri, Alexa and Google's Assistant Amazon lead the pack in next-generation digital PDAs. They have gone beyond expectations in the world of AI and are organizing our lives to such an extent that without them we would forget about the important appointments, our dry cleaning and our wedding anniversaries.

And it's not just our phones and smart home devices – ATMs and banking applications are also becoming more personalized.

Digital assistants are evolving at such a pace that they echo sci-fi movies like Minority Report and Blade Runner.

A recent study showed that PDAs are improving year by year.

Massachusetts Stone Temple has updated its 2017 study comparing popular PDAs. The Google assistant, Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana and Apple's Siri have clashed over an intelligence test.

The results do not differ much from the previous year, but what he found is that every competing assistant is making significant progress in reducing the gap with it. Google's assistant, who maintains his place of number 1.

Hello Zoe

MSC uses next-generation technology to "create a connected cruise experience."

The private cruise company has revealed that the digital personal assistant of the industry will call Zoe.

The bespoke device, which will be launched on the MSC Bellissima, is specifically designed for use in onboard cabs and will be available in seven languages. The main purpose of this digital service is to provide customers with a simple and stress-free way to find information that is traditionally requested from the customer relations office.

"Zoe is a family name, while being an internationally recognized name and easy to pronounce, regardless of the language spoken by a guest. The choice of a family name was a way to combine tradition and continuous innovation" commented Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises.

Bad number Sorry!

We rely on technology to such an extent that it would be difficult to consider life without a smartphone just for a day. So what happens when the technology becomes fictitious?

In May of this year, the New York Times reported that an Amazon Echo device had recorded the entire conversation of a couple and then shared it with one of the husband's employees.

The privacy advocates were quick to point fingers, warning that it was only a matter of time before the AI turned against us.

Quite the contrary, said Amazon, after issuing an official statement: "Echo has woken up because of a word in the background conversation that looks like" Alexa. "

"Next, the following conversation was heard as a request" to send a message ". To what point, Alexa said aloud" To whom? "At this point, the substantive conversation was interpreted as a name in the client's contact list, Alexa then asked aloud, & # 39;[contact name]Alexa then interpreted the basic conversation as "right". As unlikely as this series of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely. "

Is the future male?

Eve is asked why the default voice on Siri or any other virtual assistant is a woman? A female voice is supportive, trustworthy and, above all, reliable – just like a woman.

"We have tested many voices with our internal beta program and our customers before launch and this voice has been tested at best," said an Amazon spokesperson at PCMag.

When it came to creating Cortana, Microsoft said that he "thought long and hard about the genre".

"We have done extensive research and found that there is some warmth in a female voice that is associated with helpfulness."

Google has now taken risks and will soon be offering six voice options on its Google assistant, one of them being John Legend's sweet and soulful voice.

According to CEO Sundar Pichai, Legend's voice will be solicited in "certain contexts".
