According to the Korean news site The bell, Samsung is looking to remove the authentication function of the iris of the Galaxy S10 line. Instead, the phone will pack a fingerprint sensor on the display (FOD), the type of feature that many iPhone X users would like to be able to use.

Samsung has been considering adding functionality to its flagship S and Note lines for years, but decided to oppose it because the technology was not ready to be mass-produced. This year, however, we have seen several handsets with on-screen fingerprint sensors, and Samsung has perfected the technology for the S10. Note 9, due in August, will not have it.

The bell says that Samsung is abandoning iris analysis, adding that controls with suppliers have revealed that Samsung has not ordered any iris authentication components for the Galaxy S10. In addition to FOD, the Galaxy S10 could also pack a 3D front-facing camera configuration that would allow Samsung to offer customers a Face ID authentication method, as well as better AR Emoji.

The report notes that FOD and facial recognition may still hinder the production of Galaxy S10, so Samsung could bring back iris recognition in the near term.

It is not clear at the moment if all Galaxy S10 models will have FOD or facial recognition. Another recent report from ETNews said that Samsung is making three separate versions of Galaxy S10 for next year, including an entry-level model and a flagship device. The FOD function has been mentioned, but the report does not specify whether the three handsets will have a built-in fingerprint sensor on the screen.

The Galaxy S10 should be unveiled at the earliest in January, according to a rumor.
