Fujifilm has just reincarnated the GFX 50S without a medium-sized mirror. Announced September 25 at Photokina, the new GFX 50R uses the same 50MP medium format sensor as the GFX 50S, but in a smaller rangefinder type case. The camera contains the same bowels of the GFX 50S but shaves 145 grams – and 2000 dollars. At $ 4,500, it's not lower than the introductory price of the GFX 50S, it's cheaper than full-frame DSLRs like the Canon EOS-1DX and the Nikon D5.
The GFX 50R also uses the same X-Processor Pro processor as the new X-Processor 4 of the smallest format, the X-T3. The quality and performance of the images must be identical between GFX models. And of course, the 50R includes film simulation modes for which Fujifilm is known. Even the mechanical focal plane shutter is identical, with its 1/125-second flash sync speed.
The autofocus system has not been updated either, as the 50R uses the same contrast detection system as the 50S with 117 points. The camera also maintains burst speed at 3 fps and 1080p video at 30 fps.
Where the two cameras differ is in the body. The newer model uses a rangefinder type body that is nearly one inch thick. To do this, the 50R had to abandon the display of secondary information that we liked about the 50S. Fujifilm also made room at the back of the camera by eliminating the selection buttons and using a focus lever to adjust the focus point.
The LCD is still a tilting touch screen, but only moves in two directions instead of the three for the 50S. The EVF also has a magnification of .77x (compared to .85x) but keeps a coverage area of 100%. The ports between the two cameras also differ, the 50R housing a USB-C port instead of a USB 3.0 port. Two SD card slots are also included.
We are delighted to see that Fujifilm has not skimped on weather tightness, one of the great features of the 50S. The 50R is sealed at 64 locations and can continue to shoot at temperatures of up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. The included battery is designed for 400 shots.
In addition to the changes to the body, the 50R hosts a brand new feature: Bluetooth Low Engergy. This will automatically transfer images and synchronize smartphone settings.
In addition, Fujifilm has also expanded its current roadmap by announcing the development of Fujinon GF100-200mm F / 5.6 R LM OIS WR, GF50mm f / 3.5 R LM WR and GF45-100mm f / 4 R LM OIS WR lenses. The 50mm will be the lightest in the series, while the zooms offer more versatility. The lenses will bring the total number of GFX lenses to 11.
