The good and the bad of Red Dead Redemption multiplayer

Before GTA online, Rockstar Games tackled online multiplayer as part of its open-source games. Red Dead Redemption for Xbox 360 and PS3 was a big step beyond what was accomplished in GTA IV 's multiplayer. In many ways RDR multiplayer feels like a prototype for GTA online. With Red Dead Redemption 2 to be released in just a few weeks, followed by its own online component with Red Dead Onlineis the perfect time to revisit the online world of the first Red Dead Redemption.

Thanks to the backward compatibility features of Xbox One, I was able to load the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption and jump quickly online. Unfortunately, I discovered RDR1The progression of the multiplayer mode is related to your backup file, it is not stored on a server. So I had to start over from level 1. But that gave me a good chance to remember how RDR work. I've appeared in the world as a zombie wearing a sombrero. (I imagine that I had played a little when it was made compatible with Xbox One for the first time and that I chose a zombie character.) I whistled for my horse and instead a donkey ran over me. I had forgotten that when you started RDR online, you only get one donkey.

Red Dead Redemption The multiplayer mode offers players the ability to join standard PVP servers or peaceful servers, where players can not hurt each other. Considering one of the biggest problems of fans with GTA online These days, other players are killing them, so it was good to come back to a quieter time.

Although I enjoy my zombie character, his groans of the undead and his howls annoy me, so I move on to someone more alive. contrary to GTA online, RDR The multiplayer mode uses predefined characters, many of which have been extracted from the main game. You can play as John Marston, Abigail Marston, rival gang members, zombies, lawyers and others. Players also unlock mounts by raising levels, as well as new characters and player titles. Unlocking objects instead of buying them might be the biggest difference between GTA online and RDR multiplayer. In GTA online if you want a new car, you have to buy it at the store; in Red Dead you must level up to unlock it. The lack of need to buy new objects and weapons gives RDR a more relaxed and less grumpy atmosphere compared to GTA online. A similar system could be a good fit Red Dead Online and could help make it feel different from GTA online.

contrary to GTA Online, there is not much to do in the open world of RDR. The deserts look great, even eight years later, but they are huge. Move RDR online can feel like a chore. Even with a horse, there are many steep rocks, canyons and hills that require you to take dirt roads. There is no work or stress that you might feel in GTA onlinebut that makes RDR online feel less structured. I found myself looking for shortcuts or quick trips that were easier to use.

The open world empty and free in RDR Online is basically just a chic lobby. Rockstar even described it this way in a trailer for the multiplayer mode. In free mode, you and some friends can team up and destroy gang hiding places, start grabbing land or hunt dangerous creatures together. Land grabbing is perhaps the most interesting thing happening in the open world of RDR online. Only one player or his group can enter an area and "claim" it. Everyone on the server can attack and try to recover it. This has reminded me of the events of the open world that occur in GTA online, and the server feels more active and alive. However, happy players and embarrassing appearances (once I was sniped by an invisible player, then reappeared, then immediately killed by that same player because I bred closer to them, the make it a little more frustrating than GTA online. Fortunately, after a few deaths, you can choose to spawn away from the area where you died. Rockstar has long struggled to reduce grief and encourage cooperation, an effort that will hopefully continue Red Dead Online.

Outside the free movement, Red Dead Redemption has a lot of different modes to play. These modes are grouped in different playlists. GTA Online problems with empty lobbies and game modes. GTA online players choose a particular mode to play on a list of more than 50 at this stage. This creates a situation where the whole GTA online the population is spread over too many activities, fashions and events. As new modes are added, it becomes more and more difficult to find more players for specific modes or older modes. In RDRI was surprised to see that almost every game I attended was attended by at least a few players. Even when I had to wait a while before finding people, I did not just look at a screen in the lobby. Instead, I could actually go around the world, hit the other players and, depending on the mode, choose a charge.

The first modes I played with were some basic clashes and capture flag modes. Some were team based, others were in free fall. None of them was really fun. RDR the combat and movement controls have not aged well and they feel awkward and slow. But I was happy to see that my old RDR the pro strategy to win the clashes is still viable in 2018: never sprint. Sprint makes you appear on the mini-cards of other players. If you want to win the match to death, always walk around like a stoic cowboy, and you will win or at least be ranked in the top three most of the time.

The next mode I entered was to Red DeadUndead Nightmare DLC, called Undead Overrun. This is a fast mode where four players work together to fight as long as possible waves of zombies. Although not being the most advanced, the game mode seems more suited to Red DeadFirearms, especially when using shotguns. I found a complete team instantly, even though they were all upscale to me. One mentioned that they were coming back to Red Dead 1 to be more excited RDR2. He also hoped that Undead Nightmare would come back in a form RDR2, and I accepted.

The last mode I played was completely different: poker. Once again, I was able to quickly find a match with three other players. I jumped into the poker hoping to briefly remember what it was like, then coming out, but I ended up playing for over an hour. It was just a cooling session with guys who were kind to the microphone, a way to relax after killing zombies, stealing gold and shooting horses. A player at the table asked if anyone was receiving RDR2. The other player with a microphone screamed yes, but quickly followed with "I really hopefully they'll bring back the poker and the card games. Good news for this player: it seems that card games are coming back in RDR2, although we do not know if they will be playable in multiplayer.

My greatest hope for Red Dead Online does it return to the more relaxed and slower rhythm of Red Dead 1Online component. While GTA online It has been fun and I still want to play more as new updates come out, I'm ready for something different. J & # 39; hope Red Dead Online built on GTA onlineSuccess but remember the past. The clashes and the horse races are excellent, but I also want to just relax, play poker or go fishing.

Returning to Red Dead RedemptionOnline multiplayer mode after five years of play GTA online was strange The fighting and the game seemed slow and rudimentary, but the progression and the overall mood were appealing. I got up at one point after riding my horse and firing at coyotes, and this new level seemed significant thanks to the unlocking system. I could have a new horse … that seemed almost dead. Still, better than a donkey.
