Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 should be launched in a few weeks. In the meantime, we have Royal Battle Blackout Week beta live on PS4. He is online for Xbox One and PC this weekend.

I spent a good part of the afternoon yesterday playing at Blackout and I am especially very happy. This is a new fun mode that should really please both fans of Call of Duty and the emergent genre of the royal battle. It's a little different from the hill king Fortnite, but bears more than a few similarities with PUBG, only with more varnish.

So let's see what works and what does not work in the beta version of Blackout, with the obvious denial that Treyarch will make changes to the final release at launch and beyond.

Good

  • Zombies are an excellent twist. They are not everywhere on the map and only appear in certain places, but when they do, they are frightening, surprising and deadly. Having to deal with four or five scary undead when another player (or team) shows up can be extremely difficult. You can also use zombies to your advantage, eliminating enemies while they are being harassed by them.
  • The map is huge and varied, with many indoor and outdoor locations very deep. From steep slopes to office buildings, massive ships, a ruined asylum and a huge dam, the entire map is filled with pleasant places and looks very well designed. This is not the most beautiful map we have seen Call of Duty, but we still expected that a map of this size should cut graphic corners and it still looks very bright and colorful, although I hope we'll finally have a day / night cycle.
  • I mostly like the HUD. It takes a little while to get used to it, but once you do, you can tell pretty quickly how to navigate your options. There is a bar that shows how far you are from the safety / storm that I really like. And the D-Pad allows you to change objects and use the benefits quite easily, although it can use a little cleaning.
  • The vehicles all seem to work very well, whether you fly a helicopter or ride a mountain bike. The controls are simple and nothing seems too much on or undernourished.
  • The booty is plentiful with lots of different weapons, attachments, explosives, healing items, and so on.
  • I love the grappling hook. It allows you to quickly scale up tall structures and feels good in practice.
  • The healing is fast and you can keep a lot of healing items. As the game time is higher than normal Call of Duty, This means you can survive a shootout and quickly and easily return to the fray. You can even heal (with L1) while traveling.
  • The game works very well (when it does not crash) with a constant framerate and no noticeable lag. It's impressive for a beta version from the first day.

In the end, all these factors combine to make a very pleasant experience. As I said above, I mostly got out of my first day with the beta a happy player. But beta also has problems.

The bad

  • As many have already noted, picking up loot is a pain. You must maintain Square and you must look directly at the object. It feels a lot more bulky than a game like Fortnite. There must be a better way. Automatic bale pickup and first aid kits would be a great addition. I like how PUBG automatic pickups for anything that is useful to you, whether ammunition or an accessory that your weapon can use. I would recommend something similar here. Holding Square could still work if it was just a lot, a lot faster. And you should have a wider range of pickups for objects, because it can be very difficult to look for something and then hold Square to take it.
  • The rhythm is in the middle of the game. This is not as bad as PUBG, which may seem incredibly slow sometimes, but not as good as Fortnite no more. Some have suggested that 100 players would help, but I'm sure it would lead to more chaos early in the game rather than a more stable playing environment. The end of the game is good, with the smaller circles ending in good tense strikes, but the middle of the game is lagging behind. You correct this by speeding up the circles and making them more dead after the first one. Simple solution that has no impact on performance and that makes more sense than simply inflating the numbers. That being said, the game could go up to 100 (if it does not impact performance) and be perfect. I think that's not the way to solve the problem of stimulation, though.
  • I must say that I appreciate the simplicity of Fortnite & # 39; s weapons and ammunition. That reminds me PUBG, in that there are all these attachments and different types of ammunition and you never know exactly what goes with which gun. I also wish it was just a little easier to exchange healing items and pomegranates / specials rather than having to open the quick selection interface of the D-Pad. Thought Dark souls, where a tap on each direction of the D-Pad changes something, whether consumables or weapons or spells. The same thing could work here.
  • Is it just me or the map a little faded? Not necessarily too bright but maybe not enough contrast or the gamma is just a bit high. I like it to be colorful but I wish the colors are a little less pale and faded. For example, I play on a PS4 Pro on a LG OLED screen in 4K. This does not look anything like the picture just above this section. This image has a clear contrast and a rich color palette. The game in practice is very different.
  • The steps are strangely noisy. You hear your own steps too clearly. When I climbed on a metal floor for the first time, I was surprised.

These are just a few observations of the beta. There are probably a myriad of other ways to improve the game and if you have any ideas about what is missing or needs to be corrected, let me know

The ugly one

Finally, we come to The Ugly and, again, let me remind you that it's the beta version. I am sure that most of these problems will be solved by publication.

  • Bugs occur in the beta. I was lucky enough to only drop it once. Another time, I fell out of a match but it was just beginning. I've heard of players who crashed two or three times. How would it be frustrating? But that's what kind of stability problem that a beta like this really tests. I have faith that Treyarch will fix it.
  • The combinations are nice and everything, but when the developer tells you that if you just run to a ledge, then jump and press the jump button, you will redeploy your wingsuit, that's enough exasperating. I do not believe that the wingsuit will open by jumping from a high place (like the dam) so I no longer try and probably not until a fix has been issued. This should be more reliable and simpler to execute.
  • Kill the team. I do not know what is the point of having a default friend shot. At least there must be an option to turn it off or to play in a non-friendly playlist. It's very boring to see a teammate kill you by mistake, but players also spoil for their loot and that's all. I really do not see the point of having a friendly shot in the royal battle, so I hope that Treyarch turns it off or creates separate playlists like in normal MP (shooting friend is active in competition but not the fast game).

That's all I have in terms of first impressions. I really think it starts well and judging by the reaction of the community (for the most part), people are really excited about this mode. There are many things that I prefer in traditional Call of Duty multiplayer, of course. In modes such as Domination or Team Deathmatch, for example, you simply reappear after being killed. It means that you always play and you are always in the middle of an intense fight. The power outage is a bit slower most of the time and, like any other royal battle, looting for fifteen minutes to be killed immediately can be disheartening. But overall, it's a new big competitor in the royal battle genre.

He will definitely put the pressure on PUBG given the similarities of the two games. Fortnite is quite different (and free enough) to coexist amicably with Blackout, I think. But I know I'll be spending more of my fighting time at Blackout once the show is over, although I'm definitely not going to give up Fortnite absolutely.
