The hoverboards are over, we have e-skates now

It's been summer in New York, and I'm starting to see people rolling on hoverboards once again. But the self balancing gadgets are not as close as they were a year or two ago. They become boring, and maybe it's time for something new: something like self-balancing roller skates.

Segway announced today that he is working on a pair of "e-skates" called Drift W1. They look like something on The Jetsons with their angular black-and-white design, and as Engadget points out they also seem a bit dangerous.

It seems like you just walk on the Drift W1 on every foot, swinging on them without being tied, then leaning to start moving. It makes sense that you are not involved – you must be able to jump in case of a problem – but managing two independent self-balanced objects seems to be a little harder to catch than simply jumping

A price and a release date have not been announced yet, but Segway says it's planning to show them at a trade show at the end of August. Although this is not the first time we see a company trying to rollerblade, it's certainly the highest profile and the sign that we could start seeing imitations all over the world. Segway also says that the Drift W1 is the "first product" in a new category, stating that it plans to do more.

Will people really use them? I probably should not guess, because I would have said "no" to hoverboards, and it was obviously very bad. Hoping we can at least see an e-skate derby.
