DxOMark came out with its comprehensive review of the iPhone XS camera system. With a score of 105, the latest flagship iPhone outperformed the camera performance of all other smartphones, with the exception of Huawei's P20 Pro with its three-camera configuration. Read on for all the details.

DxOMark evaluates cameras based on a combined score of photo and video performance. The total score is not more than 100. That said, the iPhone XS Max tested by DxO has a score significantly higher, at 105, than that of the iPhone X, which had won 97 last year. The company notes that it has only tested the XS Max, but more or less expects the XS to work the same way because they have the same camera systems.
DxO notes that while the few hardware upgrades to the XS camera system are useful, the changes to the software are more noticeable.
With regard to software and image processing, the improvements are more obvious. While capturing still images, the camera continuously captures a multi-image buffer at different exposures, allowing for unpredictable time-lapse processing and simultaneous HDR, which is unique for the new iPhone at this point.
More photos
For the photo part, DxO said that the iPhone XS Max might have better zoom performance, but it still got an impressive score of 110.
Overall, however, the quality of the still images is very good and the iPhone XS Max achieves an excellent photo score of 110 points. In addition to capturing excellent picture quality under bright light, the iPhone XS Max's camera is also very reliable, consistently recording good results, taken after making. The autofocus system is one of the best we've tested and the images recorded in Apple's Portrait mode show a very good isolation of the subject.
Video performance
For the video part of the tests, the iPhone XS Max got 96 points, the instability of the white balance inside being one of its weaknesses. An excellent video performance in bright conditions was one of its main assets.
The Apple iPhone XS Max achieves an excellent 96-point video score, thanks to its outstanding performance under intense light conditions. The overall score is derived from a number of sub-scores in the same way as the score: Exposure (88), Color (88), Autofocus (91), Texture (58), Noise (75), Artifacts (84). and stabilization (94).
Although this is not taken into account in its rating system, DxO notes that the sensor reading is better on the iPhone XS than on other smartphones.
Thanks to improved sensor read speed, the rolling shutter effect that can occur during panning is much less intrusive than for some competitors – for example, the Google Pixel 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
