The iPhone XS Max has been awarded with DisplayMate – BGR

DisplayMate Technologies, a long-time company that conducts its own assessments on consumer electronics displays, has released its evaluation of the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate, president of DisplayMate and author of the reviews on the new devices, talks about the new screens of the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max.

Yes, DisplayMate regularly talks about every new smartphone screen, whether Apple, Samsung or LG. But nonetheless, Soneira has shown measurable improvement in a number of statistics, from iPhone X to iPhone XS Max, although the new phone has a bigger screen and harder to manufacture.

It would be more surprising that the iPhone XS Max did not receive the prize for the best screen for smartphone – given the improvement in technology each year, we expect the quality of screens to increase every 12 months, as we do for processors or most other components. But Soneira's analysis is able to show us exactly where the changes are:

The absolute color accuracy of the iPhone XS Max is really impressive, as shown in these figures. It has an absolute color accuracy of 0.8 JNCD (remarkable color difference) for the sRGB / Red.709 color gamut used for most consumer content and 0.8 JNCD for the wider DCI- color gamut. P3 used for 4K UHD resolution. Televisions and digital cinema, which are both visually indistinguishable from Perfect and most likely far better than any screen, monitor, TV or mobile UHD TV.

Note that to achieve absolute absolute color accuracy, the True Tone and Night Shift settings must be disabled because they change the white point of the screen from the 6500 K standard, which changes the absolute color accuracy in the range of colors. Color accuracy is not the only thing Soneira has highlighted either. Compared to the iPhone X (or all other smartphones), the XS Max offers the best brightness, as well as a higher resolution of 2688 x 1242.
