The iPhone XS Max is what Apple has always promised to the iPhone

After a summer of fairly accurate rumors, the iPhone XS Max arrived with a lot of fanfare and a proportional price. This is the ultimate expression of Steve Jobs' original vision for the iPhone, without compromise – assuming it fits your budget.

Improvements inside and outside

iPhone XS Max and XS

It's a model year "S" and you think that there would be no big changes. On the outside, aside from the size of the iPhone XS Max, this seems to be true – there are not many big design changes. We always have a notch and what's the problem, it's an exercise for the reader, and there's always an end-to-end OLED screen.

As with almost everything, it is what is inside that matters.

iPhone XS Max Display

The most obvious upgrade to the iPhone XS Max is the new 6.5-inch display. The colors are bright, the videos look great even if they are cropped or show black bars, and the touch sensitivity is still good.

We improved the speakers this year, especially with a 3D sound scene better represented. When we played music and movies, we sometimes noticed a difference and others did not.

IPhone speakers XS Max

The biggest audio change is probably the quality of the audio coming out of the grill placed in the True Depth camera. This best speaker audio has the ability to finally record stereo audio in videos, which is the biggest deal for us.

Figures and specifications

We come to the same point in mobile devices that we have been in the IT market for several years. Just about everything that is relatively modern will accomplish almost everything that a user will want to do. The specifications are not everything, but deserve to be mentioned.

Apple is generally unobtrusive about the numbers in most of its advertising and deployment events. But that does not mean that they obscure them afterwards, or that they can not be measured.

The iPhone XS Max has a HDR Super Retina HDR display from 6.5 inches to 2688 by 1242, at 458 pixels per inch. The screen is also HDR, covers the DCI-P3 color range, has a maximum brightness of 624 cd / m2 and a typical contrast ratio of 1,000,000 to 1.

The A12 Bionic is new, and it is associated not only with 64GB, 256GB or 512GB flash storage, but also with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a new top on the iPhone.

IPhone XS Max Cameras

The TrueDepth camera system, responsible not only for selfies, but also face identification, is a 7MP shooter, with an aperture f2.2.

Most of the photos will be taken with the 12MP dual camera system mounted at the back. It is slightly improved compared to the iPhone X with a larger sensor, which translates into better low-light performance, even before software support, f1.8 aperture for wide-angle and f2.4 for the telephoto lens. The optical zoom remains at 2x, with a digital zoom up to 10x

Handling the iPhone XS Max

The question we ask ourselves most is how the iPhone XS Max feels in our hands.

There have been jokes about the actual size of the iPhone XS Max. Here's the thing, though, it's actually a smaller hair than iPhone Plus models, but a little more dense. Of course, anyone with a smaller hand might have a hard time completing this operation, but not more than they would have done with the Plus phone line presented with the iPhone 6 Plus.

iPhone XS Max

The weight of the iPhone XS Max is largely due to the stainless steel frame rather than to aluminum. The shiny stainless steel sides and the glass sides have a somewhat slippery finish, so the weight can either give you a little extra back to help you hang it, or a problem that makes it fall more often of one hand, according to the user. Throwing a holster can also reduce slippiness, but if you tend to "strip" and avoid protection, this could be a problem.

Fortunately, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XS have parity of features, including the quality of the screen. There is no obvious feature that you get by going with the 6.5 inch iPhone XS Max on the iPhone 5.8 inch iPhone XS other than the screen area . The only exception to this rule is Apple, which boasts a battery life slightly higher than what we do not really see in actual use, but with the omnipresence of wireless chargers and MFi battery cases, this is not really a problem.

Release the photo bug

We spend a lot of time taking pictures with our iPhone. That's why an increase in quality – any increase in quality – catches our eye.

If you only need a few words on the iPhone XS Max camera, that's it – it's better than the X, but not necessarily enough to guarantee a complete update.

What is new this year is the size of the pixels. On the wide angle camera, the largest sensor is equipped with a 1.4 micron pixel pitch, up from 1.22 micrometer last year. By increasing the pixel depth by up to 20%, this allows the pixel to capture more light, which helps in low light photography.

Apple has also paired the updated eight-core neural engine with the A12 Bionic to help master photography. Apple says it helps with things like facial recognition, facial cues, and image segmentation during portrait photos.

We immediately noticed faster shutter speeds and no lag when we went to take pictures. When we shot in portrait mode, it was possible to activate the portrait effect faster and identify the subject in less time than on our X.

We took outside to get some examples of photos and were very impressed. The photos are remarkable by themselves, but when we compare them to the X, there is less and less difference.

When we maximize the digital zoom at 10X, we notice that the iPhone X has a few more details. The effects of neural motor smoothing in the iPhone XS seem to be a bit more aggressive in trying to get a more pleasant picture. In fact, when you're filming something that's supposed to be a bit sharper – like those cliffs or a building – you do not necessarily want smoothing to happen.

When we talked about the specs, we said that these deeper pixels should help reduce the performance of light and this seems to be exactly what happened. Photos with low light appear a little brighter, even if you do not use the flash.

Speaking of the flash, that also had an update. Updating the True Tone flash should help the photos look more natural, but we rarely used the flash to find out. Looking at them from the outside, you notice that it's not quite pink on the two lower LEDs, but otherwise, it looks pretty similar.

All that glitters is not gold

iPhone XS Max Colors

There are new colors this year, which will make some people happy, but gold can be a polarizing color. Fortunately, Apple has kept it subtle as in the past. The gold color is not the stereotype of bright yellow gold, but rather a casual hue. This is not quite copper, nor pink gold, but somewhere in between.

Apple compensates for the shiny golden strip of stainless steel with a slightly tinted glass that looks good even for those of us who are not usually fans.

Connectivity and charge

Wi-Fi is always present with a MIMO 4×4 antenna. Again, it depends on the utility of your network environment. On a daily basis, we find better Wi-Fi connectivity and transfers about 50% faster with the best antenna system, compared to the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 8 .

The entire family of iPhone XS also supports Gigabit LTE, which is used in the United States depending on where you live. In addition, the iPhone XS is the first iPhone to support T-Mobile's LTE "Band 71" at 600 MHz, which will be of great help to urban users with skyscrapers generating wireless shadows of poor reception.

Practically, the Gigabit LTE is impressive from the point of view of speed. In a Washington DC suburb, our iPhone XS Max has seen its download rate double in almost every environment.

Overall, just about every user will see an increase in the speed of the new iPhone XS series modem and antenna system. How much difference depends on a thousand different variables.

Bluetooth 5.0 remains unchanged from the 2017 harvest of iPhones. Users coming from more than a year will see some benefits, but not the loads, since Bluetooth 4.2 was pretty solid in itself.

As Apple took the heat to include a 15W charger with the iPad Pro 12.9 inch, it should take the same heat for the 5W charger with the iPhone XS Max.

From the cable point of view, Apple has always refused to send a USB-C cable to Lightning in the box. Although there is a debate at AppleInsider About this topic, I do not think the iPhone should adopt USB-C.

The future is wireless, so instead of hampering its entire user base with an intermediate port type on the way to achieve it, Apple should stick to Lightning, but adopt USB- C at the other end. This cable is already sold separately, but there is no reason why it should not be included in the box, especially on a larger phone that may use the faster charge it offers.

Look on today and the future

Apple has done a great job with the iPhone XS Max. That's frankly, the best iPhone ever made by Apple. This statement does not weigh heavily, because every year, Apple presents the world the "best iPhone" he has ever manufactured. This is as true this year as last year.

It is still at its base, an iPhone. If you have been fans of the iPhone in the past, you will definitely love the latest model. It has the most technology ever packaged in an iPhone that seems to be more forward looking rather than perfect today.

From the point of view of usability, all applications that take advantage of the features of the iPhone X all work on the iPhone XS Max. They certainly charge a little faster, but for example, Fortnite It's not necessarily more playable here than on last year's iPhones, and the Pages will not be able to perform your task better than before.

The neural engine seems to be a configuration for something. Of course, this helps to take better pictures now, and we think that it also helps to parallelize the calculations on the hearts of the A12 a little better than before, but that sounds like an untapped potential for the moment.

Better Siri? Improved user security protection? I do not know for sure yet, but it's going to be fun.

So who?

iPhone XS Max

It is a complicated question. The family of the iPhone XS is powerful, but the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus too, and the iPhone X. And, frankly, the vast majority of smartphone users are probably performance on an older iPhone from the point of view of performance. version of iOS 12.

IPhone 6 users, if they choose to upgrade, will however see an incredible increase in all aspects of the iPhone. Users of the iPhone X will see less, obviously.

A long time ago, at the launch of the iPhone, Steve Jobs told the world that this single device replaced many others, with a single unit and compact. Today, the iPhone still includes dozens of standalone devices such as cameras, audio recorders, iPods and many others. It quickly becomes the device of choice for many users, leaving behind "desktops" and powerful laptops.

The iPhone XS Max is an impressive device, endowed with many technologies, just like the original iPhone. It's an uncompromising hardware phone, with an equally uncompromising price.

Apple's iPhone XS Max is currently the ultimate expression of a unique device that encompasses all your technological needs without a full case of gadgets.
