In a new report, Bloomberg reveals that Face ID's component supplier, AMS AG, has been forced to reduce its estimates of turnover and that the company (in a less subtle way) is blaming a particular company.
AMS has revised its revenue estimates for the fourth quarter of 2018, from $ 610 million to new lows at $ 480, referring to "recent changes in a large customer's request." AMS is the latest in a series of iPhone providers to announce revenue cuts. These include Hon Hai, the leading iPhone assembler, Japan Display, screen provider, and Lumentum Holdings, Face ID provider at AMS.
Hon Hai was the main focus, but the fact that Apple's new iPhones are the first to use facial identity across the range (only the iPhone X used it last year) should have made so that suppliers of facial identity components would benefit especially this year. But obviously, this is not a solution.
"Many vendors have reduced their numbers because of their" biggest client, "Apple, unnamed," analyst Chaim Siegel, an analyst at Elazar Capital. told Reuters.
And, in truth, the signs are coming.
Last month, I stressed the mystery surrounding the sales of the iPhone XR. Widely inclined to sell more than the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max handsets, it took five days for the iPhone XR to sell its initial stock, while historically the first batch Apple disappears in a few hours. Since then, Apple has stated that it will no longer report sales figures from the iPhone.
The growing defects of the iPhone hardware do not help either. Last week, Apple confirmed serious material fault on the iPhone X, which means that Apple had to issue hardware warnings concerning four of the last five generations of iPhone: iPhone X (details), iPhone 8 (details), iPhone 7 (details) and iPhone 6 (details).
Combine these problems with Apple's ever-increasing prices for iPhone, many glean software and the decision of the major carriers of delay eSim support for new models, and I can understand why customers may not rush to upgrade.
That said, if you want to upgrade, I believe that the iPhone XR is the model to buy. It's not cheap, but the fact that you can buy two 64GB iPhone XR for only 50 USD more than a 512GB iPhone XS Max and get a better battery life start says everything.
So, if the iPhone XR does not sell either, Apple really has a problem …
