Apple
Responding to questions about actual performance, the popular YouTube PhoneBuff site turned to robotics and found that for all iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max incredible CPU performance, the battery life is a mess. Especially the biggest model.
What PhoneBuff has discovered is the iPhone XS Max, the largest and the most expensive iPhone ever manufacturedSamsung's Galaxy Note 9 did not survive. In fact, when the iPhone XS Max died, the Note 9 still had a huge autonomy of 37%.
It's a shock for several reasons.
First, although the Galaxy Note 9 battery is bigger, it is only 20% larger (4,000 mAh against 3,174 mAh). Secondly, Note 9 has a higher resolution screen and pixel management is the most demanding task of a phone. Third, the Snapdragon 845 chipset in Note 9 is less efficient than the remarkable apple chip 12 in the iPhone XS Max.
Which points the finger towards the software. Apple claims that iOS 12 is the fastest and most efficient generation of iOS to date. Apparently not.
But what makes these tests so interesting is the attention to detail by PhoneBuff.
The battery life test used by PhoneBuff took a year, it uses a temperature-controlled environment and calibrates the brightness of the screen and the volume of the speakers of both phones. In addition, the entire test is performed with a robotic arm ensuring exactly the same pattern of faucets, use of applications and even reaction time, during phone calls, messaging, navigation Web, social media, gaming and video tests.
In short: this is as much a test of battery life as perfectly controlled as possible.
In the end, the iPhone XS Max is very short. Something from previous tests had also suggestedbut PhoneBuff rubber pads. And as the iPhone XS lasts even less than the iPhone XS Max, the new Apple smartphones are falling so far from the competition There is no way to fill this gap through software updates. Note 9 is not even the the most durable Android phone.
I have discussed in my IPhone XS and iPhone XS Max comparison that Apple had exchanged its users in terms of battery capacity and "Incredibly slow" charge. And now we know for sure. So, if you plan to move to a new iPhone this year, the decision is easy because the iPhone XR is not just the the cheapest and the most interesting, he has a lot more battery life too…
