Hello, customer informed of the iPhone. Ready for an upgrade? There are a few things you need to know before you empty your wallet at the Apple store.
This is a particularly puzzling moment: Apple will not sell less than eight iPhone models in 2018. But they are not all on sale yet – and there are reasons to hold back on the two most expensive ones who hit Friday: $ 1,000 iPhone XS and $ 1,100 XS Max.
Wait, the new iPhone is not the best? Yes, Apple would have big problems if it were not. And I do not need to tell you what makes a great iPhone: a simple design, a great camera, a software that works most often, and a free Apple support.
But the changes in the XS are incremental. Compared to the iPhone X last year, it's a little faster, with a better camera and a slightly longer battery. If you can not live without these improvements, stop reading and buy an XS.

There is another category of people who should buy now: those who want all the iPhone that Apple will sell. The only big change in this year's iPhone harvest is the XS Max. This is the X-Treme Big Gulp of iPhones: measuring 6.5 inches, its screen is bigger than a Snickers, a Subway sandwich or the heel of a 6-inch stylus. The XS Max is the closest iPhone to the port of a computer in your pocket, and the version with 512 GB of storage costs up to one: $ 1,450.

If these phones sound too big or too expensive, then good news: you have options. Here are five reasons not to buy the iPhone XS and what to buy.

Reason 1: iPhone XR arrives
Apple has a surprise in October: another new model, called iPhone XR, arrives October 26 for 750 dollars.
It features a 6.1-inch version of the latest borderless screen design and Apple's fastest processor. The XR seems to be 90% as good as the iPhone XS for 75% of the price. (There are also cooler colors, including coral and blue.)
In October, we will be able to better judge corners that Apple has removed with it. These include a lower quality display, a less sophisticated case and a single backup camera. So, wait a month.
Reason 2: Your thumb rule
The iPhone XS and XS Max do not have a fingerprint reader. Apple puts forward the favorite home button, in favor of the authenti-face system that debuted on the iPhone X, called FaceID. It works about 90% of the time for me.
If your thumb is not ready to go, you can recover a fast and user-friendly iPhone 8, which Apple now sells for $ 600. Or, a new iPhone 7 costs only $ 450.

Reason 3: Your hands are not giant
The 5.7-inch XS is the smallest of Apple's new iPhones, but it's still big enough for some people's hands. If you miss the old days when a phone could fit in a pair of skinny jeans, hunt down a 4-inch iPhone SE.
Apple has officially stopped selling the SE. But the version of the SE that came out in 2017 is still as fast as an iPhone 6S and uses the latest iOS 12 Apple. those refurbished on eBay and elsewhere for $ 170. (Also, Earth will thank you for buying something used.)

Reason 4: You are curious about Android
A new Google Pixel phone is expected to arrive Oct. 9, which could make people jealous of Apple. Google has seduced in the past the quality of its camera, as well as its sleek version of the Android operating system.
And Samsung Note9's $ 1,000 phone, released in August, exceeds in some respects even the iPhone Xs Max. It has a 6.4 inch screen, a stylus, an iris reader and even the ability to plug in a keyboard, mouse and desktop screen. Oh, and it comes in the lavender.

Reason 5: You do not have $ 200 to burn a hole in your pocket
You can buy an iPhone X, which is 95% better than the new XS. Apple does not sell it officially anymore, but you can find one on eBay for around $ 800. Brand new. You'll get a face ID, two reverse cameras, a portrait mode and fun dance animojis.
The iPhone X looks almost identical to the latest products, so no one will really know it. And you will be $ 200 richer.
