OnePlus raised questions earlier this month when the removal of the headphone jack was confirmed. Although the last image disclosed does not remove an existing feature, it appears that one of the expected hardware updates will not be visible on the OnePlus 6T.
Spotted by Roland Quant on WinFuture, the images of the Shenzhen-based manufacturer's next camera show the OnePlus 6T equipped with a dual-camera lens on the back of the handset, and not the triple lens that some were waiting for.
This is also related to something seen between the OnePlus 3 and 3T, and the OnePlus 5 and 5T … the big design changes are introduced with the cardinal numbers, and the changes to the design (with a pinch of new features) are delivered with the T update. The leaked images show a back design that strongly echoes the OnePlus 6, though, as expected, the fingerprint sensor has been removed and placed elsewhere.
Since Samsung, Huawei, Nokia and Apple place great importance on smartphone imaging, the lack of a three-lens camera means that a clear visual loss of the OnePlus family has been noted. The camera was one of the weak points of the packages – while the performance has kept pace with the competition, it has never been a class leader.
All winning smartphones do not need a triple goal, as highlighted by the family of iPhone XS. For many to have a "good enough" camera as part of a flagship product, it is acceptable to get the last percentage points. Camera benchmarking tests would be better served in other areas, such as a new biometric scanner.
Specifically, the OnePlus 6T will be one of the first consumer smartphones equipped with an integrated fingerprint reader. And it will not be long. The official marketing campaigns started with OnePlus pushing the "Amazon Notify Me" alert for the Indian consumer looking to buy the handset.
The OnePlus 6T is expected to be launched in mid-October, and retail will be available soon after launch, which could take place on October 16th.
