It was hardly a secret but now Porsche has made it official: a new 911 Speedster goes into production in 2019.
Porsche made the announcement Tuesday at the Paris Motor Show 2018, where it also unveiled a red version of the 911 Speedster concept car introduced for the first time in silver color in June as part of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of Porsche.
Production of the 911 Speedster is scheduled for the first half of 2019 and only 1,948 units will be built. The number representing the year when Porsche's first sports car, the 356, was registered. We do not know yet how many are destined for the United States.
The prototypes of the car have been tested over the past year. They feature the concept's double bubble back deck as well as a sleek, clean-roofed roof hiding under a makeshift unit. The windshield is also tilted more than ordinary 911 variants.

Expect the production model to also adopt the carbon fiber reinforced body panels and specifications of the concept 911 GT3 Touring Pack. We are talking about a naturally aspirated 4.0 liter naturally aspirated 6-cylinder engine delivering 500 horsepower to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The car should also include a titanium exhaust system.
According to Porsche, the car will also be available with heritage-inspired colors through the Porsche Exclusive personalization department. The first concept of the 911 Speedster suggests what will be proposed. We hope that retro mirrors look nice too.
Porsche tends to launch the 911 Speedsters to farewell to the 911 generation on which they rest, in this case the 991 which will soon be replaced by the 992. The body style also reconnects the 911 to the old Porsche cars like the 356 Speedster of origin and later the 550.
