The Nissan 370Z sports car has been proven in recent years, receiving only minor updates. This new Nissan Motorsports Project Clubsport 23, however, contains a new 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo engine, exactly the kind of bullet in the arm that the car needs. Unfortunately, the sports club is only a single piece for this week's SEMA show.
In addition, the engine is not exactly "new". Derived from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 Red Sport 400 models, the VR30DDTT produces the same 400 horsepower power as in both cars. That does not mean that the Clubsport powertrain is from there, far from it. The biggest difference is that Nissan has equipped the Clubsport with a manual transmission. Neither Infiniti can be used with a stick, so much work has been done to make the 370Z Nismo work with the new V6 manual. MA Motorsports has developed a clutch disk, cover and flywheel for the car, and a NISMO two-way rear differential is assisted by a MA Motorsports differential cooler.
The changes do not stop there. The Clubsport project receives a heat exchanger and a cold air inlet from AMS Performance, discharge valves and silicone cooling hoses for the radiator and intercooler of Z1 Motorsports, as well as a cooler AM Motorsports Power Steering System and Dual Exhaust System. A set of 18-inch Rays aluminum wheels is wrapped in Hankook RS4 tires of size 285 / 35R-18; the new wheels will soon be available at Nissan dealers. Split two-piece brake discs from Z1 Motorsports are also equipped with NISMO performance brake pads and brake lines. The KW Variant spring coil shock absorbers and Eibach springs are combined with a body protection kit and other NISMO suspension elements.
It would not be a special SEMA without some style improvements to accompany the performance mods, and Project Clubsport is no different. This dual exhaust system comes out through holes located next to the rear registration plate instead of the lower diffuser, and the rear bumper has been modified accordingly. An APR carbon fiber front splitter, a MA Motorsports larger front air dam and a Seibon carbon fiber hood are complemented by NISMO carbon fiber mirrors and pillar trim. Speedesign Custom Graphics's burnt orange trim completes it all.
Inside, Sparco QRT-R racing seats with six-point harness, a Sparco steering wheel, a custom roll bar and a fire extinguishing system. The upholstery has been refitted by MA Motorsports in quilted black leather with contrasting stitching, reminiscent of the diamond pattern of the original 240Z.
Nissan says the Project Clubsport is a "rolling parts development platform", indicating that the car will be continually modified and used as a test bench for new parts and components, both OEM and after -sale.
Oh, and remember how we said the car is a unique piece? This is not quite true. Nissan claims that, based on customer interest, its Motorsports division could offer a kit allowing customers to convert their own 370Z into "the ultimate Z-track car." Although it's unlikely that such a factory-made kit includes the twin-turbo engine, we can dream, is not it?
