Incompatibilities are one thing, and to some extent you have to expect tasteless behavior when major upgrades happen. It comes with the maintenance territory of many different hardware combinations. However, when updates start interfering with documents and other files, there is something to worry about.
This recently discovered bug is about file archives and how Windows handles the extraction process. Some users have complained that Windows overwrites existing files on the hard drive without asking, if there is a file with the same name.

I have reinstalled Windows and it always does. It's only on the October update. Nice bug because you can accidentally overwrite a file and have no way to recover it, "wrote a user on Reddit.
Although this leaves the original file intact (yay!), It's still a boring bug (boo!). I have never seen a dialog box warn me of the duplicate file and ask me how I wanted to handle it. As such, it would be easy to assume that the archived file was extracted correctly, while it was not. Under normal circumstances, there should be a dialog box with three options:
- Replace files in the destination
- Skip these files
- Let me decide for each file
