"We have just finished the inaugural season of the Overwatch League, crowning our first champion in front of a crowd of dedicated and passionate fans," said Pete Vlastelica, Activision Blizzard Esports President and CEO.
"Now that we look forward to the 2019 season and beyond, we are adding eight new teams that will help us grow our league in important regions around the world."
The teams do not play in their hometowns during the season but instead play at Blizzard's facility in Burbank, California. Blizzard aims to change this in the coming years, hoping to turn the Overwatch League into something similar to traditional sports. The competitive game as a whole is quickly making a name for itself, with dedicated arenas multiplying in countries around the world and large-scale technological companies like Nvidia, responsible for the creation of esports camps.
