If it was not before, it is clear now that PS Vita is endangered. Sony has announced plans to cut production in Japan soon, essentially condemning the phone to death. There is no specific date yet for the production stop, but the days of PS Vita are certainly numbered.
Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president Hiroyuki Oda announced the news in a new interview with Famitsu. He also said that Sony did not currently have a successor project for PS Vita, and we will probably not see the company change direction after the ramping up of mobile devices. With the switch ready to fill in the gaps left by handheld gaming, this probably makes the development of a successor to the Vita even less desirable.
Oda does not give a precise date for this production stop, only saying that this will happen next year, the deliveries being obviously finished at that time. Although this 2019 date applies only to Japan, production is unlikely to continue in other regions as PS Vita has been most successful in its home country. It is therefore unwise for Sony to stop production in Japan while continuing to ship new units in North America and Europe.
Indeed, the writing is already on the wall here on the other side of the Pacific. Earlier this year, Sony announced it would end production of the PS Vita GameCard in the US and Europe on March 31, 2019. The games will still be available, but production should stop soon after the disappearance of GameCards.
So here it is: at some point next year, Sony will kill the PS Vita in Japan and focus entirely on the PS4 and the PS4 Pro. What do you think of this news? Go to the comments section and let us know!
