AMD added two new second-generation Threadripper processors to its product stack on Monday, reducing entry costs for enthusiasts looking to embark on a state-of-the-art desktop chip (HEDT) based on the latest Ryzen silicon.

The Threadripper 2950X, the cheapest piece of the second-lowest-priced second generation, was priced at $ 899. This distinction now belongs to the new Threadripper 2920X, a 12-core / 24-thread processor running from 3.5GHz to 4.3GHz with 38MB total cache and 180W TDP. It's $ 150 cheaper at $ 649 and will be available today.

In August, we found that the Threadripper 2920X was probably the most intriguing of the group, given its number of threads / kernel and its price of $ 649. It's still excessive for games – a second-generation Ryzen processor like the Ryzen 7 2700X offers more for your money – but for users who want to get into Threadripper, the price is certainly more acceptable. It will also be interesting to see where street pricing will eventually hit prices once inevitable sales and price declines come.

AMD is particularly interested in ray tracing performance, compared to Intel chips.

"The 2970WX and 2920X processors offer up to 32% faster performance in ray tracing and 60% faster encryption for creators compared to the Core i9-7960X and Core i7-7820X respectively," AMD says.

The ray tracing claim is based on a handful of AMD internal cue points, including POV-Ray 3.7 nT, Corona 1.3, V-Ray 1.0.8, DaVinci Resolve 15, and Maya 2018. How the casting performance of spokes are reflected on games when coupled with a GeForce RTX graphics card remains to be seen.

The game alone should not be a reason to consider a Threadripper chip. HEDT components are designed for the most challenging tasks, such as video encoding and content creation tasks that can overload core and extra threads (compared to traditional desktop chips).

Whatever the case may be, professionals and hobbyists now have more second generation Threadripper options available to them.
