The Tumblr app has disappeared from the App Store and the iPhone software of the famous blog service has been mysteriously extracted from the Apple download store. Although the reason for its demise has not been clarified, there are rumors that Tumblr violated Apple's policy of inappropriate content.
Currently, searches for the Tumblr app in the App Store only generate third-party browsers. The official app is not found, however.
What motivated the removal of the application is not clear yet. Tumblr itself confirmed the demise of its application on Friday, Nov. 16, claiming at the time that it was trying to fix the problem. However, this did not motivate the absence of the application.
"We are working on resolving a problem with the iOS application and hope to be able to function completely again," the company said in a statement. "We appreciate your patience as we discover this and we will update this article when we have news to share."
Since then, Tumblr staff has released two other updates. "We are still working on the problem of the iOS application," the company said Nov. 17. "We will inform you here as soon as everything is repaired."
As of this morning, the official word is that a fix is always a work in progress. "Our team is still working to fix the problem with the iOS app," said Tumblr in an update. "Thank you for standing while we work on it."
The problem was reported for the first time by PiunikaWeb, who reported late last week that the App Store would display the Tumblr application only if safe mode was disabled. Shortly after, the application has completely disappeared from the store. Users who have already installed it have reported problems using all features.
Although neither Tumblr nor Apple made specific comments, it appears that the app is considered a violation of the rules of the App Store on inappropriate content. Adult content is certainly one of the many uses of the site by Tumblr users. Tumblr users who share explicit content on their pages are supposed to assign themselves an "NSFW" tag, which prevents these pages from displaying in regular searches, among other limitations.
For those who have already downloaded Tumblr on an iOS device before, there is a possible workaround. The "Bought" tab of the App Store should have a copy of the app to install, although this still does not resolve complaints that not all features are present at the moment.
If it's good of a content problem, Tumblr finds itself in a leading company. Earlier this year, Apple removed the Telegram app after claiming that it had been used for terrorist communications. The application was restored in June.
