Ice Climbers Stay Cool!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is huge. Not just in terms of hype and importance and sales potential, but just in terms of sheer stuff. The Nintendo Switch mascot fighter features over a hundred stages, nearly a thousand songs, and too many Pokemon and items and Assist Trophies to get you started. When you have a lot of big Nintendo franchises, putting them all in one game will make that very big boy indeed.

But the biggest, most exciting thing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is its mind-blowing, heartwarming roster of playable characters. Fighting games themselves are not just the strength of their mechanics but the strength of their fighters, especially in a crossover fighters like this. and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate crushes all rivals by every single playable character from the previous series in the twenty-year-old series. Include the new combatants and so far we have 70 fighters to wrap our heads around. We're excited, but we're also intimidated. So to get ready for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, every day, character by character, we're creating the ultimate guide to all of its characters. Today's fighter: Ice Climbers.

Who are they?

Ice Climber is a bad game. You could argue for platformers were different in 1985 on the NES, but this is the same console with Super Mario Bros. on it. Still, despite starring in a bad game, adorable little Eskimo couple Popo and Nana made a great impression with their strong bond, big hammers, and quirky enemies.

Smash History

Making a game that you just do not want to satisfy them all. So you have to keep things fresh by adding characters Resurrecting the Ice Climbers in Super Smash Bros. Melee It's a little bigger than Captain Falcon or Ness.

What Looks New in Ultimate?

The Ice Climbers skipped Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS, probably because the limited 3DS could not handle what is essentially two characters in one. But they're back in Ultimate, now in HD. The biggest difference here is that with the removal of chaingrabbing and some of the glitchier aspects of past Smash games, Ice Climbers can not rely on the powerful to the point of broken tactics of "desyncing," or getting each character to perform separate actions for combos. Like before, when Nana dies Popo is weaker alone. But even when you have Nana you can not use her during certain actions.

Our Hopes?

I always appreciated the sheer bonkers skill it took to pull off truly nasty Ice Climber desync combos. So I'm sad to see the technique just from a spectator's perspective. They are more likely to be buffed. Mostly I'm just glad the Ice Climbers are back. They're too cool.
