The improvements made by Apple go beyond the double-sided backward-facing matrix. The new XS and XS Max have an updated front camera sensor that can shoot 1080p video at 60 frames per second.
By recording in 1080p at 30 frames per second, the XS Max achieves a much better dynamic range compared to the iPhone X thanks to the internal components. Increased dynamic range is available as long as users do not take pictures at 60 frames per second.
Moving to 1080p at 60fps on the XS Max reduces the dynamic range a bit, but the result is still better than 1080p at 30fps on the iPhone X.
Turning to the rear camera, the 4K 30fps shooting on the wide lens of the iPhone XS Max produced an image with breathtaking details. As expected, the dynamic range is also significantly improved compared to the iPhone X, with better reproduction of the most visible colors in the sky.
A shore shot from a lake provides exquisite details in the trees. The iPhone X is not able to reproduce the same level of fidelity as the XS Max, nor can it compete with color accuracy.
By switching to telephoto, the additional details offered by XS Max are immediately apparent.
Testing autofocus capabilities: Both phones are incredibly fast during the transition of focus between background content and a nearby object. However, there is a very clear difference between the two devices when a face comes into play.
Pan between the background and a face – ensuring that the phone locks each time – the iPhone XS Max focuses at an impressive pace, much faster than its predecessor. Although this is not confirmed, we believe that the ultra-fast face detection is due to the synergy between the iPhone XS and the new XS Max neural engine and the image signal processor set to day.
The XS and XS Max can now record audio in stereo, which adds an extra layer of depth to the recordings. In contrast, all models of iPhone until 2018, including the iPhone X, record the sound in mono.
Interestingly, Apple seems to have improved the optical image stabilization system included in the iPhone X. Still attached to wide lenses and telephoto lenses, the new version on iPhone XS Max provides smooth and silky video, even by walking fast.
Stabilization on XS Max is evident when reviewing still images of captured images previously, as shown below in very detailed sheets. There is also a huge difference in the reproduction of the colors of the grass. The XS Max is the obvious winner here.
By comparing the slow motion images captured at 4K 60fps and 1080p 240fps, the XS Max again shows better dynamics and a noticeable difference in detail.
Passing through a dimly lit environment with a few bright lamps in the background, improving the dynamic range is just as remarkable. The iPhone X detonates bright subjects, while the XS Max is able to keep every detail balanced and colorful. The noise was also reduced on the XS Max, again thanks to the new ISP.
On the front camera, we noticed that the XS Max had better white balance and indoor details. It also seems to have been zoomed a bit more than the iPhone X.
Our last night shot had the biggest difference in performance between the two handsets. The iPhone X blows a completely illuminated Comfort Inn panel against a nearly black background. The XS Max, meanwhile, is able to accurately represent the blue background of the sign, the red / yellow logo and the white text. The blue lights that cut the building are actually blue on the XS Max, while they are faded and white on the X.
Looking at the darkest areas of the scene, the XS Max is able to keep it as bright as the iPhone X, demonstrating Apple's efforts to improve momentum.
Based on the observed video quality differences, it is obvious that the XS and XS Max have received a fairly serious camera upgrade that not only helps photography, but also video. We expected a change in quality, but not at this point. Apple really made mobile videography up with iPhone XS and XS Max.
