Mobile gaming is all the rage these days, because almost everyone has a cell phone and it's easy to transmit a game via the device to someone who could play a game for five minutes during the lunch break. We have seen traditionally hardcore games attempting to attract casual gamers to mobile devices, and apparently Warcraft will get the Pokemon Go treatment soon.
The Verge wrote an article based on a report published on Kotaku regarding Blizzard's mobile development ecosystem and corporate culture impacting the decisions made by the company. Towards the end of the long report, it was mentioned that some of the people with whom Kotaku met at Blizzard were part of an "incubation" team working on a mobile interpretation of Warcraft for smartphones.
According to the report segment, Blizzard developers are developing the concept of Pokemon Gobut for a Warcraft Game. The idea is that this is going to be based on the basic concepts of the Niantic Labs title, but that it will have more gameplay, especially in the solo mode department. What exactly does it mean? No idea, since the report does not enter into any sort of specificity regarding functionality or mechanics.
Presumably, if it's going to be geo-based, then it's probably going to be focused on capturing popular characters from the Warcraft franchise. Now, keep in mind that this extends beyond World of Warcraft, which is the MMORPG. Initially, the brand started as a real-time strategy title and became extremely popular after a trilogy of titles. Blizzard is also redoing Warcraft III to give fans of RTS something to eat based on the classic strategy title released on PC in 2002.
Cory Stockton, who assumed the role of lead designer, would lead this upcoming mobile project. Stockton previously worked as a senior designer and content designer for World of Warcraft for several years, succeeding other personalities of society. One of his latest projects for the franchise was the Cataclysm Expansion pack that came out in 2010, and he's been in the company for almost 15 years after spending some time at Insomniac Games.
So, Stockton is not a new bird, and he's definitely a veteran of all things Warcraft. It is only logical that he is chosen to lead the design on a mobile version of the game. The report states that it is not only his dedication to the Blizzard brand that has earned him first place, but also because he's a big fan of Pokémon games in general.
There is no name for it Pokemon Go _inspired Warcraft game, and apparently he is still in the early stages of production. This game will join other Blizzard mobile projects, including _Diablo Immortal, which did not go down very well when it was announced at BlizzCon last year.
Yes Warcraft gets the Pokemon Go treatment, it will join a few other developing games that have also attempted to take advantage of the popularity of mobile gaming, including Harry Potter, The dead who walk, and Jurassic World.
