The video game publisher THQ Nordic has bought the intellectual property "Kingdoms of Amalur" and other assets from 38 studios, announced Thursday the group.
The transaction includes the action role-playing game of 38 Studios "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" and its abandoned MMORPG project dubbed "Copernicus". "Evaluating suites and new content".
"Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning" was created with the help of R.A., best-selling author of The New York Times. Salvatore, the creator of "Spawn" Todd McFarlane, and the lead designer "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion", Ken Rolston. It was released in February 2012 and was favorably viewed by critics, but was only sold around 330,000 copies in the first month. 38 studios closed later.
Founded in 2006 by former MLB launcher Curt Schilling, 38 studios were originally based in Massachusetts, but were transferred to Rhode Island after receiving a $ 75 million loan from the Economic Development Corporation ( EDC). When he went bankrupt, he left Rhode Island for $ 75 million and left many game developers out of work. The state sued the game developer and even launched a criminal investigation. Schilling and other studio executives agreed to settle the dispute for $ 2.5 million in 2016.
The assets of 38 studios were auctioned in December 2013, but there was no acceptable offer for Copernicus, according to Polygon.
"Amalur" is not the only IP THQ Nordic to have recovered in recent weeks. Its publishing label Deep Silver acquired rights to Crytek's "Timesplitters" and "Second Sight" last month.
