The Tor project, the organization behind the Tor network and the Tor browser, today launched its very first mobile browser with the release of the Tor browser for Android.

The Tor Browser for Android app is available on the official Google Play Store and is currently considered an alpha version, which means that bugs are to be expected.

This first official version of Tor Browser on Android will replace Orfox, another Android browser that supports Web browsing via the Tor network and its Onion protocol.

Orfox was, until recently, developed by the Guardian Project, but was withdrawn today after the official announcement of the Tor project.

The Tor project is now using its dedicated fan base to help test the Android version.

For Alpha versions of the Tor browser for Android, users will also need to install Orbot, a mobile proxy application that will help the Android browser connect to the Tor network. For future versions, the Tor project indicates that this will not be necessary.

According to a list of features released by the Tor Project today, the Tor Browser for Android is equipped with:

  • Tracker Blocker – The Tor browser isolates visitors from each website so that followers and third-party ads can not follow them. All cookies are automatically deleted when users have finished browsing.
  • Fingerprint Protection – The Tor Browser for Android makes it difficult to fingerprint users based on their browser and device information.
  • No ISP Blocks – Users are free to access all sites, even those blocked by local ISPs.
  • Connections via Tor Network – Everyone who monitors the network connection and browsing habits of a user can find that the user accesses the Tor network or accesses sites via IP addresses belonging to the Tor network .
  • Multi-layer encryption – All traffic flowing through the Tor network is encrypted using the Onion protocol.

The Tor project did not say he was considering developing an iOS version, but in the meantime, he continued to recommend iOS users to use the iOS version. Onion Browser application by Mike Taggs.

The release of the Android version of the Tor browser comes a day after the Tor project released a major update of its desktop version.

Yesterday, the Tor project released Tor Browser v8, which updated the underlying code base of Tor Browser with the Firefox Quantum code base launched by Mozilla in November 2017 with Firefox 57 and which received rave reviews.
