Toyota introduces 2018 Century, the third generation of the luxury sedan

Lexus is Toyota's first brand in the US, but in Japan, the flagship is Century. Commercialized for the first time in 1967, it represents Toyota's highest level of craftsmanship, luxury and comfort – and 21 years after the last overhaul, the 3rd-Century Century was launched for some lucky Japanese VIPs. Toyota plans to sell only 50 chauffeured cars a month, according to a company statement.

The price of 2018 Century starts at 19,600,000 yen, or 178,164 dollars at the exchange rate of today. For comparison buyers, Century's base price is about the same as two well-equipped Lexus LS 2018 sedans, two 2018 Toyota Land Cruisers or five top-of-the-line Toyota Camry V6 XSE 2018s.

A look at the outside of the century reveals its purpose. The interior space of the rear seats is proportionately larger than in most sedans, which indicates that it is there that the important people are. The driver 's front seat is not cramped, but it is significantly smaller than the accommodations at the rear.

You could confuse the century for a Rolls Royce, especially on the side. The resemblance seems intentional. Calling the century form "an appealing eternal design that permeates tradition and dignity," Toyota says the "luxury vehicle outline reflects the Japanese aesthetic of passive symmetry while employing a proprietary ideology that aims to create a royal back seat.

The complex front grille of the Century showcases the hand-engraved phoenix emblem of the car, which according to Toyota requires six weeks of work by a skilled craftsman.

The 2018 Century has a hybrid powertrain, combining a 375-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine and a 221-horsepower electric motor for a total of 596 horsepower. According to Toyota, the Century's power combination provides 13.6 kilometers per liter of fuel – about 32 miles per gallon.

Standard equipment includes active noise control and electronically controlled air suspension.

The 2018 Century includes Toyota Safety Sense with four components. The pre-collision system helps prevent or mitigate anything that strikes, including vehicles and pedestrians. Lane Departure Alert uses audible and visual alerts to inform the driver if the car is drifting off the track, with standard lane-assisting assistance that will pull the wheel to keep the vehicle heading.

Radar cruise control with all-speed tracking helps maintain distance from a leading vehicle and the adaptive high beam system controls the headlights. Blind spot monitoring and parking assistance are standard.

If you have not realized from the outside of the century that the rear compartment is where the buyers of this car are meant to ride, the interior will put you right. The back corner has a raised ceiling with luxury ceiling fabric. The rear passenger rear seat has an adjustable leg rest with integrated pneumatic massage function.

The Century's rear seat features an 11.6-inch infotainment display at the rear and a 12-channel audio amp with 20 speakers. A 7-inch screen in the rear center armrest allows VIPs to control the car's audio system, air conditioning, massage function (left seat only) and rear side window curtains.
