In March, we learned that Toyota would unveil Supra's production in the first half of 2019. The automaker confirmed that the sports car would debut at the Detroit auto show in January.
It has been five years since Toyota launched the concept FT-1, also at the Detroit Auto Show. Just this year, Toyota has introduced some racing versions of the Supra that give a glimpse of the style of the road car. We have seen so many camouflaged prototypes in recent months and we even drove one recently. The automaker has released a teaser image of the hood leading to the big revelation.
In an interview with Supra's chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, we learned that the Supra would have a supercharged six-cylinder in-line engine, double the rigidity of the Toyota 86's body and offer a perfect balance of 50: 50 between the front and the back. The tandem shares a platform with the BMW Z4, which was revealed last August at a very different place: Pebble Beach.
The production of the Toyota Supra 2020 will begin in the first half of 2019. Toyota has announced that it is going to auction the world's first model, without providing any additional information. We'll learn more details the week of Jan. 14, when the Detroit auto show starts, unless Toyota decides to release more information before the Supra's official debut.
