The Tumblr app for iPhone and iPad has disappeared from the Application Store Friday, November 16th. Shortly after, Tumblr announced that it was "working to solve a problem" with the application, but stopped to explain the problem.
This was not before Download.com approached Tumblr with sources claiming that child pornography had been found on the service, that the social network had issued a statement providing more information.
In his statement, Tumblr stated that every image uploaded to the service is "scanned with the help of an industrial database containing information about sexual abuse of known children", and that the detected images never reach the platform. However, a "routine audit" had revealed content that had not yet been included in the industry database, and Tumblr had acted "immediately" to remove it.
"Content protection is a difficult aspect of small-scale platform operation," he added. "We are constantly evaluating the steps we can take to improve ourselves and there is no greater priority for our team."
This is not the first time that a popular application is removed from the Application Store for forbidden content. In February, Apple extracted the encrypted Telegram email application from its store for violating Apple's iOS development guidelines, which require all apps hosting user-generated content to include a method filtering objectionable content.
When Telegram broke Apple's guidelines, the application was back Application Store Within 24 hours. Tumblr said that restoring its application was its "number one priority", but it remains unavailable for iOS devices, although Android users can still download Tumblr through the Google Play Store.
