Earlier this year, Microsoft management split the Windows division into two, transferring Windows engineering to the same group as Azure engineering. It was only a matter of time before Windows and Azure started to share the same code name scheme, did not it?
The April 2019 version of the Windows client, named Windows 10 19H1, does not use the Azure naming convention. But the release after 19H1 – scheduled for October 2019 – will be, say my sources.
The Azure team uses the elements for the code names. The current Azure code name for 19H1 deliverables is "Titanium" (Ti), but the Windows client did not use it because they had already started using "19H1" internally and externally.

The version of Windows 10 that some of us expected to call calling 19H2 will actually call "Vanadium" (V), say my contacts, according to the Azure naming scheme . If the team is keeping to the order of the items table, the first version of Windows in 2020 will be called "Chrome" (Cr). Obviously, this could create more than confusion, since Google uses this term. As a result, I hear that the team is probably using an invented item name for this publication, probably "Vibranium". (Vibranium is the shield of Captain America, as I learned at school.)
I've asked Microsoft to confirm the Vanadium and Vibranium code names for future versions of Windows, but no word to date. (I do not hold my breath.) Update: A spokesman said that Microsoft had no comments.
A quick reminder about the feature code update codes of Windows 10 so far:
- Threshold 1: Windows 10/1507
- Threshold 2: Update Windows 10 November / 1511
- Redstone 1: Update Windows 10/1607 Anniversary
- Redstone 2: Windows 10/1703 Creator Update
- Redstone 3: Update Windows 10 Fall Creators / 1709
- Redstone 4: Update Windows 10 April 2018/1803
- Redstone 5: Windows 10 October 2018 Update / 1809
- 19H1: Update of Windows 10 April 2019/1903 (?)
The code name Threshold, for those who wonder, comes from the planet around which the first halo ring orbit in the original Halo game was launched in 2001. The codename Redstone comes from Minecraft, which Microsoft acquired when he bought Mojang.
Even though "Redstone 5", as in the Windows 10 October / 1909 update, has not been re-materialized yet, the planning and code names are not immobile.

Update: As the Walking Cat on Twitter reminded me, the Surface team also seems to have used the elements, as well as some of their code names. Among the code names for the latest surface devices are "Caprock", "Croton" and "Forks," which correspond to the chemical elements Ca, Cr and F, emphasizes the Cat.
