The commercial director of WhatsApp is going, the latest in a series of top-level Facebook starts and its associated applications.
Neeraj Arora, a veteran of the seven-year-old encrypted email application, announced Monday on Facebook that he was retiring, noting that he was considering spending more time with his family.
"It's time to move on, but I can not be more proud of how WhatsApp continues to touch people in so many different ways every day.I am confident that WhatsApp will continue to be the product of simple, secure and trusted communication for years to come, "he wrote. "I'm going to take some time to recharge my batteries and spend time with my family."
The release of Arora comes as Facebook goes from one scandal to the next and following numerous outflows of senior executives. Earlier this year, Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger left Facebook's photo-sharing application, and Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe stepped down in October.
WhatsApp has been revealed to be particularly controversial for Facebook. WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum was rescued in April 2018, apparently due to privacy concerns. And in September, Brian Acton, the other co-founder of WhatsApp, made public allegations of violent clashes with Facebook's leadership on monetization. WhatsApp is among the most widely used products on Facebook, although the company has made slow progress in its efforts to monetize the free application.
Arora, a former Google employee, joined WhatsApp in November 2011 and was its sales manager. After Koum's resignation, it would appear that Arora will become the next chief enforcement officer, but this role was eventually handed over to Chris Daniels, former vice president of internet.org, the Facebook's internet connectivity efforts.
