In recent years, Sony has regularly organized its PlayStation Experience towards the end of the year. This is a good way to complete the last 12 months by taking a distant look at upcoming PlayStation exclusives or summarizing some of the recent success stories. Sony is generally preparing for December after Paris Games Week and has already used the PlayStation experience to highlight some of the upcoming games for the PS4. This year, however, there will be no PlayStation experience and Sony explains why it will not hold the event in 2018.
The news was broadcast via a podcast on the PlayStation blog. Surprisingly, he did not receive his own press release, which is typical with a great ad like this one. Instead, Sony's global studio president, Shawn Layden, has appeared on the podcast to explain why there will be no PlayStation experience this year, stating:
In other words, there are not enough games that attract attention to justify the organization of a complete PlayStation Experience event. Of course, Sony could showcase dreams and Past daysbut beyond that, it does not seem that there is enough content to convince anyone to bring back the event.
I know some people probably think about The last of us part IIhope to see more gameplay or possibly a new movie sequence, but it does not sound like Naughty Dog was able to present any new content. Last year, the developers gave players a rather awful look on the zombie survival drama via a shocking trailer at PSX, introducing players to some of the new characters that will appear in the game.
The lack of Playstation experience this year also means that games like dreams and Past days will soon be in the final stages of development. As such, Sony is likely to focus on developing and fine tuning these titles instead of organizing promotional and marketing events for games.
Past days is a bit like a mix between Son of anarchy and The Second World War, and the developers worked hard to finish the open and multi-choice action game for a PS4 launch in February 2019. While the game will not be featured at the PlayStation Experience this year – there has been some success. "That could also mean that Sony's next series of games might not be intended for the PlayStation 4.
It would be logical for Sony's next big release to focus on the games of a brand new game console. Otherwise, maybe Sony has just exhausted all its exclusives for the moment and there is nothing new to show or announce. In the meantime, PlayStation players still have Marvel's Spider-Man play through, and both Past days and dreams play on the horizon.
