Some Windows 10 users have learned the hard way that even though the upgrades have gone well in the past, it is always wise to back up the files before updating the operating system.
Microsoft launched this week the launch of Windows 10 1809 this week and some users have now discovered that the update was erasing important files, including photos and music, reports MSPoweruser.
Several early users of the Windows 10 1809 update reported missing file issues on Reddit, Twitter, and the Microsoft Community Forum.
Robert Ziko, a mediocre user of Windows 10 1809, claims to have lost 220GB of data after the update.
"I just updated my windows with the October update (10, version 1809) .All my 23 year old files were deleted for a 220GB amount. It's amazing, I'm "It's been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that has ever happened to me," he wrote on the Microsoft user forum.
"The files were in location C: / Users / rober / Documents / This location is still there, no files, all files have been deleted."
Fortunately, he backed up his system two months ago and was able to restore those deleted files, but lost everything since that snapshot. Restoring an earlier version did not restore deleted files either.
As noted by a Windows 10 user on Twitter, documents saved in the user directory and not OneDrive will be deleted.

For those who prefer not to automatically respond to the latest version of Windows 10, Ed Bott of ZDNet has instructions to take control of the update.
Another strange bug that seems to have survived Microsoft's last-minute bug-fixing efforts during the preview is the improper generation of reports on CPU usage by the Task Manager.
In addition, Microsoft has blocked the Windows 10 1809 update for some systems due to a compatibility issue with the Intel Display Audio device drivers. The problem results in "excessive processor demand and reduced battery life" if the affected system is updated.
The compatibility issue is for systems with the Intel Audio Display device driver, intcdaud.sys, versions 10.25.0.3 through 10.25.0.8.
Customers whose Intel drivers are affected will see the "What needs your attention" warning message is described in this support document for KB4465877.
Microsoft recommends selecting "Back" rather than confirming, which allows the system to keep the current version of Windows 10.
"To ensure a seamless experience, we are preventing Windows from offering the 1809 version of Windows 10 until you install Intel device driver updates on your current operating system," notes Microsoft. .
The company also notifies users of the affected Intel drivers about the manual update of Windows 10 1809.
"We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to Windows 10, version 1809, using the Update Now button or the Microsoft Software Download Center Support Creation Tool." "said Microsoft.
"Wait for new Intel device drivers to be available with the update.This page will be updated once the block is removed."
Intel has a hotfix available in the form of the 10.25.0.10 driver, which comes with the Intel Graphics Driver version 24.20.100.6286 and newer.
Intel has stated that it "strongly recommends" users of its 6th generation Skylake processors or its latest processors to confirm that they have the updated version before installing Windows 10 1809 .
