Windows 10 users are being warned after a major issue was discovered with the October 2018 update.
Recently some Windows 10 fans who downloaded the October update have been hit by a surprise problem.
The PC users took to Windows 10 forums and Reddit to claim the latest Microsoft update had been deleting some of their personal files.
Many of those hit by the Windows 10 issue have apparently not been able to recover the deleted files.
In one post a Windows 10 user wrote: ”Last night I updated to 1809, and it all went smoothly, but then I find that all my files in Documents are DELETED.
“Gone. Poof. This included many crucial documents and financial info.
“Yes, I have a backup (I think – using Windows Backup to a NAS). But this is pretty bad. Did no one in the first two rings run into this yet?”
They added: “I understand (from the news) that this happens to all files in Documents that aren’t synced to OneDrive.
“Further, the Documents folder is really an agglomeration of “Documents” from several different paths – not sure how that works, and it may or may not relate.”
While in a post on Reddit another Windows 10 user wrote: “So after updating i discovered that my documents, pictures, music, videos are gone”.
Responding to the Redditor, one user said: “I lost my D:Document folder.
“It is not configured as a documents library and it’s not even in system drive!
“I do not have backup for this because I think the system upgrade should never ever touch non-system drive.
“Thank god I recovered all my data with Recuva.
“I think the update tool downloads the new system image to the document folder and then deletes it for cleaning up, because I found the deleted esd file in the removed D:Document.”
And now, following these reports, Microsoft has pulled the Windows 10 October 2018 update.
The support page for the Windows update now displays this message: “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating.”
Microsoft added: “We will provide an update when we resume rolling out the Windows 10 October 2018 Update to customers.”
The Windows 10 October 2018 Update provides a bunch of new functionality for fans of the operating system.
Android users can download the “Your Phone” application that will allow photos and texts to be instantly accessible on a Windows 10 device.
Apple fans are also able to seamlessly transition from a browser on their iPhone to a PC thanks to a new “linked phone” feature.
While the Windows 10 update, which at the moment can’t be downloaded, also brings with it 157 new emojis and tweaks existing ones.
