The fall skirmish may be behind us, but Epic Games has announced a new open tournament "Winter Royale" that will kick off this month. The developer has put $ 1,000,000 worth of prizes into play for the winter games and everyone can qualify to be part of it.
"There will be plenty of opportunities for anyone to try to get a high score on qualifying days at the Winter Royale, "Epic writes in a blog post. The highest score you will get during a session will be the one that counts, so be sure to give it your all! "
In addition to qualifying for the Winter Royale, ephemeral cups will be organized. You'll find them in the Events tab of the game. These cups will be short tournaments with different rules, similar to competitive time-limited modes. "Think of them as the equivalent of competing MTLs for which we can test big adjustments in a more competitive environment, "writes Epic.
Winter Royale games will use the same game settings as the current Pop-Up Cup. Players with the highest score in the qualifying rounds will then advance to the Winter Royale Finals. Do not forget that only your highest score during an event session is important.
Here are the dates:
- Winter Royal Qualification (OPEN): 24/11/2018 – 25/11/2018
- Europe Winter Royale Final: 30/11/2018 – 01/12/2018
- Winter North American Finals: 12/11/2018 – 12/12/2018
Epic directs us to the Game Events tab for specific periods of all these tournaments. You can find out more about Winter Royale tournaments here.
I'm happy to see that Epic Games is focusing more on competitive gaming, which was a bit mixed up to now. The game, at least in its natural state, is not very well designed for big streaming tournaments and we have seen a lot of failures along the way. That being said, I think there are many ways for this game to work as an eSport and in competitive tournaments like this, and I'm always happy to see the qualifying rounds open to the general public. The best players are not always the most famous, after all.
