Xbox One adds support for mouse and keyboard

We have been waiting for a long time, but Microsoft has promised to give Xbox One owners the ability to use mouse and keyboard controls for a variety of games on the home console. This has been a controversial decision – because of the way the keyboard and mouse provide more precision than a controller – but the option is nevertheless there.

On Major Nelson's blog, it is announced that keyboard and mouse support is now enabled for Xbox One. You can use the keyboard to type and execute commands or use the mouse to navigate menus or play games.

Keyboard and mouse support has been added to the November update for Xbox One and this option can be enabled for developers to use for certain games. Now keep in mind that the fact that Microsoft allows you to play with devices as a preferred control scheme does not mean that all games will allow you to use them.

Developers will need to enable this feature, and I imagine that only some developers will enable keyboard and mouse support in some games. Players have complained in the past that allowing people to play with a keyboard and mouse in competing multiplayer games could give them a profoundly unfair advantage.

Epic Games Fortnite is one of the first games to have this feature enabled. This makes sense, since the game is compatible across multiple platforms and Xbox One owners are already able to play with PC-based players using the keyboard and mouse, or with Switch owners who can use the Joy-Cons.

In addition, Epic has defined the place where you can choose to enable matching which places only players with keyboard and mouse against other players using keyboards and mice. It keeps things fair, for the most part. Obviously, not all keyboards and mice are equal, however, and some players with a high DPI gaming mouse will still have an advantage over those who use a basic device configuration.

Other games that support new device options for the Xbox One include Digital Extreme. Warframe via a custom update, with the Warhammercooperative theme game Vermintide 2 from Fatshark Games. The competitive flight sim Thunder of war also made the feature available. Other games will also adapt the option, including Children of Morta, Moonlight, Warfaceand the Bohemia Interactive Zombies Survival Simulator, DayZ.

Microsoft has also teamed up with Razer to create a specially designed, Xbox-compatible keyboard / mouse that players can use with both the Xbox One and Windows 10 operating systems. It also comes with a specific Xbox key for console-oriented features and a dynamic lighting configuration that players can control.

I'm curious if 343 Industries will allow keyboard and mouse commands for Halo games on the Xbox One? Or if the coalition will make games like Gears of War 4 compatible with devices? I could really see the options becoming disruptive within the multiplayer ecosystem of the Xbox One if one or the other developer decided to adopt PC style game controls. However, if you want to play your Xbox games with a keyboard and mouse, you can do it now.
