Xbox running on an Xbox model without a disk drive for next year

Microsoft said they were trying to innovate in the gaming market, especially with the introduction of an integrated cloud gaming service. But he could also experiment with a system model that relies more on digital downloads than on discs – and we could see it as soon as possible.

A new Thurrott report suggests that Microsoft is already working hard on a new Xbox model that does not use a disk drive. As a result, it will rely specifically on digital downloadable games and will cost much less than its current model Xbox One S – up to about $ 200.

Not only that, but the company is also considering a program in which it will offer a "disc-to-digital" exchange, in which players can import their games and get digital codes in return. (It's unclear if this only applies to third-party Microsoft games, or if third-party games like Red Dead Redemption 2 are included.)

The report also notes, "Regarding Scarlett (the next material reported by the company), Microsoft is still trying to decide if this console will include a disk drive but should make the final decision here shortly."

Microsoft did not comment on its hardware projects in 2019, as it was likely its existing Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles, as they were still selling quite well. So, take this report with a grain of salt.

It is unlikely that the company will opt for this model in the future, as a number of players prefer physical disks to digital downloads, especially those that do not have access to a powerful Internet connection. But to offer something optional would make sense; and give the company the opportunity to test new hardware before moving forward with its plans for the still unknown console of the "next Xbox".

And that would certainly help those who are not caseworkers, just like the All Access program announced previously. Not to mention that the disks would not be worn in the system.

Again, nothing has been confirmed yet, but we will see what Microsoft will announce in the next few months. It will certainly be interesting to see how a diskless system works, not to mention the kind of impact it will have on the retail market.
