Xiaomi used Poco F1 to troll OnePlus 6T but its do-the-math talk does not add up

It's not that way to the madness. The OnePlus 6T is one of the biggest smartphone launches in India this year it makes sense to target the event, and troll OnePlus 6T, to get some eyeballs and attention. But that is exactly what Xiaomi is probably going to get trolls, rather too inordinately, the OnePlus 6T on the phone's launch in Delhi. From first impression it seems that Xiaomi has a point. Xiaomi's argument is that Poco F1 has a starting price of Rs 20,999 while the base variant of the OnePlus 6T costs Rs 37,999. So why not save money and get Poco F1?

This is also an argument that is total nonsense. Because if this argument can be made, then you can make an argument that why not get Redmi? Or why not buy the Redmi 6 instead of Redmi 5 Pro and save money? Those arguments can not be made because the phones are so different. This is the same case with the Poco F1 and the OnePlus 6T. These are two very different phones.

Both are good phones and the price of the F1 Poco is very aggressive, making it a good value for money. But there is one aspect in which it is a better phone than the OnePlus 6T. The OnePlus 6T and the Poco F1, despite whatever Xiaomi says, belong to different segments. The Poco F1 is a mainstream phone with a high-performance Snapdragon 845 inside it. The OnePlus 6T is an outright premium high-end phone that towers over the Poco F1 in almost everything that matters, including performance that Xiaomi highlighted while trolling the OnePlus 6T.

The only common feature between the Poco F1 and the OnePlus 6T is the Snapdragon 845 chip. But that is just a commonality on the paper. In use, the OnePlus 6T feels faster and has a very good experience.

OnePlus 6T is a top class. The Poco F1, meanwhile, is more of value preposition. It gives you a good experience at a great price. If you do the math, there will be a difference between "good enough" and "nearly perfect"

And this is same across all other aspects that matter. The Poco F1 design with its plastic body in no way compare to the premium feel and looks of the metal and glass OnePlus 6T. The Poco F1 screen does not match what OnePlus offers with its OLED display. The performance of cameras in the Poco F1 and the OnePlus 6T is one of the best cameras in the world.

More significantly, the value preposition is totally different between these two phones, something that makes OnePlus 6T a vastly superior phone compared to the Poco F1. And this despite the fact that it costs more. OnePlus has a stellar record of pushing out latest Android updates and security updates to its phones at a rapid pace. Xiaomi continues to focus on its MIUI, which is a good choice for Android. And so far updates have not been that fast. The OxygenOS, which is close to stock Android and still has some useful features, is better than the MIUI that I see on the Poco F1.

In one campaign targeting OnePlus 6T, Xiaomi asks people to do math. But numbers are not everything. Specs are not everything. Great phones are more than sum of their parts. They are the kind of phones where everything comes together. The OnePlus 6T is that kind of phone. It is indeed top class. The Poco F1, meanwhile, is more of value preposition. It gives you a good experience at a great price. If you do the math, there will be a difference between "good enough" and "nearly perfect".

Let me repeat again: none of this means the Poco F1 is a bad phone. But if Xiaomi really wants to take on the OnePlus 6T – or the OnePlus 7 next year – with a Poco phone it needs to troll less and up its game. May be the Poco F2 will be the phone that will match to OnePlus better, whether it is the design, screen or software. The Poco F1 is not that phone.
